“Did the ‘Fightning’ ever operate in hours of darkness?”
    indeed they did Gareth.
As a small lad in the late 60’s there was many a winter evening when a low sustained rumble would draw me outside to witness a pair of double white dots climbing hard to the east north east in the night sky and you knew that the boys from Wattisham were out on another QRA in search of a Bear somewhere over the southern North Sea.
In those days there was far less general background traffic noise and light pollution at night and they would be about eight to ten miles away pulling a left hand climbing turn to head out over the coast.

Of course back then times were much different and a parent would think nothing of letting a 12yr old lad cycle off with a chum and a packed lunch for the 40 mile round trip cycle ride to sit by the crash gate all day.
It was a little like going fishing really, sometimes you would be there all day and not see a thing, other times well……..it just blew your socks off. 😀
    Happy days.

We remember them all, from whatever service and whatever time, from the long ago past to the present day but if it is OK with everyone here I will try and run this on a daily basis for the next few months.
Not simply to focus our attention on a small group of people at a particular time for after all we must not forget that many on all sides made the ultimate sacrifice for what they felt was their patriotic duty and most were ordinary folk like you and I.
In the years that followed thousands paid the same price and we remember and honour them, but lets for just the next week or two pay particular attention to..”The Few”.

Sadly it just goes to show the old saying is still true.

I think you could be right allthough at only 4k I couldn’t blow it up big enough to be sure, the topography looks about right, lots of green fields, saltmarsh and MUD !
Always lovely to see and hear you go over, Mrs Whalebone says it is the only thing that is sure to get me out of the chair with any speed of a weekend !

“Snnhhh Snnhhh” sniffing the air ‘I smell no 109’s’ in my locality but just a minute, could this be why I get a flyby by well known Mustang on a regular basis ? And I thought it was just because it was me and I live where I do, ah well.

Oh how we dream of 55p p/ltr. Here in the uk it is just about to break the 90p barrier, that’s around $1.65 p/ltr, and the tax is going up again in September !
I agree with you however Robbo ‘they’ will get you one way of the other

From what you have said I think the film makers probably got it about right regarding De-Gualle.
There was a series of TV programmes on the BBC in 2000 for the 55th anniversary of VE day and one of these focussed on the relationships between the allied leaders.
British intelligence regarded De-Gaulle as such a security liabilty in 42/43 that they gave serious consideration to having him fall victim to an “accident”.
Despite his intense personal dislike for the man Churchill refused to let the plot go ahead. If you read some of his writings regarding the actions of the post war French goverment under De-Gaulle it was a decision he later regretted.

It feels very strange reading the report. It is something that you feel inextricably drawn to even though you know what it contains will bring feelings of sadness coupled with memories of better times.
We all lost someone who we felt we ‘knew’ that day.
May I suggest that out of respect to Mark and his family we do not enter into too much of a debate on the forum into the why’s, wherefores and what if’s.

May I also suggest that tonight we give thanks for a life that brought something special to so many people and raise a silent glass to Mark, his family, all those who have ‘gone before’ and to those who continue.
May your God’s protect and keep you.

Thanks for posting those, esp the spang Phantom – you always appreciate these things more after the event.

I bet your Missus will do somersaults when she sees that pic!

As it turned out I think the word somersault is a bit of an understatement !!

Finally just before home time the heavens opened and Mrs Whalebone got bored ( she will kill me, tee hee ! ). Then it got very noisy again and Mr Walton dropped in. The Blenheim did a couple of passes on the way back from somwhere else, it crashed at Denham the following day.
Hope you enjoyed these, more in the coming weeks.
