Yes and RAF Barnham for housing? A former munitions MU with a large area once infested with a huge underground storage warren of narrow gauge railway sidings. I used to live there and whilst the camp was a lovely place to dwell, the old bomb dump (not the old SSA) was a pretty uninspiring place to be building a housing estate. Great for rallying old cars and ripping around on trials bikes though…

What do you expect if you have a very critical aircraft and you install an engine which is turning in the wrong direction!

The Merlin turns the same direction as a DB601 and 605. It turns the opposite way to the Hispano-Suiza engine, which turned the opposite way to the DB it had to initially replace…

They aren’t necessary as we don’t fire the guns these days. The original Spanish armament configuration 20mm Hispano cannon created a shock wave that could cause an unhealthy deployment of the wing leading edge slats and an undesirable aerodynamic configuration as a result. The wing fence was a modification to counter this from spoiling your day…

Colour scheme’s wrong on her dress and her hair. Obviously not using the correct wartime shades. Typical error…

    Oh and where’s her stockings?

Yes please Argonaut. Blackbushe pictures from the WoGB period are always fascinating to see. Many thanks.

It was one that Euroworld ferried in from Spain, definitely. I can remember it being in Control Column as well. The other one that was at BH was on its way to the Confederate Air Force. Euroworld also ferried the one for Dolph Overton that went via Strathallan.

In the B/w set of pictures the A26c is the Don Bullock/Euroworld machine and is shown at Biggin Hill as is the CASA 352 having just been ferried in from Spain by Don Bullock and Peter Hoare. This is the aeroplane now at Cosford in the British Aiways scheme. If you look closely at the CASA you can see the dodgy markings applied for the show appearance!

I think it was taken down from Airspace due to structural issues with it but it must be a sod to put back up there again. One thing that has always intrigued me is the sand mix paint on the leading edges – anyone technical know why they did it?

Aerodynamic de-stabilisation of an inherently stable wing profile to provide a better training platform for the Saudi Strikemasters in the ground attack role…

    from memory 😉

They weren’t all like it though.

I agree about WW2 having been very extensively covered. There really can’t be that many surviving veterans who will still be there to tell their undoubtedly interesting and probably courageous stories. What about the early to mid Cold War period? It seems to have been totally passed over in the main. There must be thousands of Aircrew and Groundcrew with exciting and interesting tales to tell like flying FAA Helicopters in Borneo, Beverlies in the Middle East, Venoms in the Far East, Javelins in Germany, Gannets into Malta etc etc. I hope when my RAF service period becomes “fashionable” that I will be able to publish some of the thousands of pictures that I took of the RAF at work at home and abroad. Until then, they will remain gathering dust…

You should have seen the size of the saucer of warm water and the tweezers that I had to use, Mike!

No they are not vinyl decals they are painted on. I know because I drew them on and masked them out and painted the badge! The badge on the fuselage was copied directly from an original that was an original B of B film vinyl created by Alan Tomkins in 1968 and given to me from Connie Edwards, via John Romain. You can’t get much more authentic than that (unless you’ve just bought an original Buchon still in is 1968 film paint).

Oh yes – fortunate not to have quality magazines like Warbirds Worldwide.

Have you tried Classic Wings magazine from New Zealand? Top quality writing, amazing paper, photography and printing. It’s not that big but it leaves you wanting more of the same unlike the current state of FP. I find Classic Wings very similar outlook to early-mid period Warbirds Worldwide before it lost its way and just became “Mustangs Monthly” and a vehicle for advertising the venture of one of its sponsors…

Oh and there’s none of that overprinting or lines of computer graphic rivets messing up the pages! It’s a magazine by enthusiasts for enthusiasts with hardly any repetition of news articles from over here.

Personally I am enjoying the resurgence of Aeroplane under Ben’s leadership. The paper is better than the Izal stuff being used by the previous publisher but we are never going to see the quality that Aircraft Illustrated used to have again. The magazine went right down the toilet under the previous man at the helm and everyone I know in the warbird community had stopped buying it as a result. The mix of civil and military has improved and there are no endless articles on BBMF or Guy Gibson…
Flypast need to get a grip of quality control as the page design layout is a total mess, difficult to read and the product of some art director trying to sensationalise the content of the articles. The material should be able to stand on it’s own without the need for rivets and bullet holes across the text. And don’t get me started on those hideous computer graphic representations of Beaufighters etc. The covers of Airfix boxes 40 years ago were more realistic and I know because I was making those models!
