Now that we are into the quietest and grimmest time of the year at Duxford and with the reduced airborne activity and reduced camera activity by our resident Paparazzi, perhaps it would be a good time to look at some of the highlights of DXD 2015 or maybe they could treat us to some of their archive shots? I say this, as today it was dark, wet, windy and cold at the airfield and the only activity was the movement of excavators on the site of the new ARC hangar. Or perhaps we need a new thread “Duxford Digger Diary”…:D

Thank you to all those who have looked into this for me. Speaking with the owner at Duxford today, I can say he is thrilled with the information that has come to light so far and some interesting leads have surfaced. I think he’s ordered several books as well! The period of it in store at Dyce seems to be the most vague but undoubtedly someone somewhere has some photos. It would be great if enough information can be gathered to reproduce the early livery during its forthcoming overhaul.

Thanks for the replies so far. The owner tells me that it was in a two tone scheme up until the 1950’s but he has only a b/w shot in the “Moths in detail” book. He is keen to establish what two colours these were. It also sports a number 3 on the rudder. Any ideas from the DH specialists out there?

Pen Pusher has intimate connections to the site transport, from a group “liaison” some years ago…

I don’t think any of it was properly filmed but there may have been a dubious set of snaps going around. Something like “DCW does Duxford”… :stupid:

Absolutely stunning photography Brian, you really have excelled this time. I would imagine the lighting conditions to be “challenging” but you seem to have made it look easy! I’ve really enjoyed looking at these.

Peter and John Loweth were clean shaven when they started the rebuild. Here they are today after celebrating their achievement…

It was filmed ages ago and yes the logo on P9374 was a mock up and N3200 hadn’t been applied at that point. From memory it was applied in the week before the Sept air display. The one on P9374 was white paper whereas the one on N3200 is “off white” vinyl if you really want to be really detailed! 😉

Any updates on the AAM building ?

I assume all of the glass is back in, and the building is again weather proof ?
It will be interesting to see what (if anything) is different inside. Aircraft aside.

I believe they hope to change the skin deposits on the SR-71 for an updated set…

    Hi All,
How come ARC sold the second Firefly ? I thought the idea was to restore the better of the two to airworthiness and keep the second as a spares ship ?

    Geoff.

You might have thought that, but then you have never been actually involved in the project. The more complete Firefly was retained and the incomplete example was used as part of a deal to bring a substantially complete Spitfire IX project the other way for potential restoration to fly. The original more complete Firefly has been under survey and now restoration at Duxford for a number of years and it’s not a new happening. For the record the other Firefly was not “extensively spares recovered”. There really was very little material that was of any great use and the retained airframe is almost complete anyway. I am sure it will be a project to keep an eye on as it makes steady progress. Research into it’s original scheme is on-going…
Oh and the other example is not “stored on site”, it’s in the Netherlands.

Any pictures of ‘558 on the dump at Marham before her first “Resurrection”?

Not enough scale “skin” on the SR-71 Blackbird in my opinion…:)

Well the new arrival is a bit of a Film Star and still wears some of the colours applied for the Memphis Belle Film of 1989. We are told he appears twice!

Who knows what colour, what name or whether he will be Legends… (got in there first!)

The red Tug is Theresa, whereas the scruffy light green one is the original and world famous Terence the Tug.
