There is indeed an article on the painting of the Buchon in its B of B film colours in Aeroplane magazine at the moment and with some previously unpublished photographs. I can tell you the colours are multi national. The “Blue” is actually an FS grey, The Yellow and dark Green are German, the light Green is British and the Blue on the badge is French! The black and white are naturally to be found worldwide! 😉

I hope anyone reading the article enjoys it, even if it has been updated and re-cycled, I enjoyed writing it. I also enjoyed “Septic’s” article in Classic Aircraft, highly recommended. 😎

Has anyone got a picture of 558 on the dump at Marham before it was exchanged for the other example XH560 that was there in 1987 when I was there? I think XL445 and 426 were the only ones to be in the darker grey at the end of Vulcan operations and only 445 was in wrap round.

From memory XH558 never even wore wrap round in service. It was medium sea grey undersides with dayglo guidelines when it retired from active service as a tanker on 50 Sqn. The hideous gloss wrap round was done when it had a major service at NMSU at Kinloss for forthcoming display duties when it relieved the “tired” XL426 which was in another scheme itself!

Perhaps it is a mod from when the aircraft was operated in Sweden? I’ll look at our one at ARC and compare.

G-BDKS and G-BECM served in later years. I think two former team aircraft were destroyed when performing with the Vixen Two after the team was finally axed. There was also the Jubille Duo when Rothmans had axed the team, only to restore it a couple of years later. The Pitts team originally didn’t have the yellow pin-striping, this came second time around. Not to be forgotten were at least one Islander and a Partenavia as support aircraft. They were always excellent and I well remember them at Old Warden in the mid-70’s and also down on the seafront at Southend. Final time I caught the whole team was at Biggin Hill, probably 1979. Much missed. I seem to recall one of the aircraft being in its Rothmans colours still but with a giant size reg instead of “Rothmans” on the side. What happened to the one that was with Bob Mitchell at Cosford?

“Roobarb and David Burke, put your hands up and step away from the Hawkinge photographs, negatives and notebooks, there is no escape you are surrounded…” 😀

It was initially brilliant in concept, content and quality. It then got better, with features and interviews you just couldn’t believe. Then it got not so good in content, and was always being late. Then it got full of Mustangs and adverts for Stallion 51. I’d lost interest in it long before it’s unfortunate demise. Sorry, but endless P51 features and a magazine that was always on sale to the punters at DX long before it arrived with the subscribers isn’t what I subscribed for. I still look at them on occasion though.
