During the current work being undertaken on PZ865, we removed a blanked over air scoop about the size of a 2p coin. Under the rivetted blanking plate was the intake scoop in the original blue paintwork:) I duly fetched my books of colour chips and set to work. Although the colour does change in different lighting conditions (they all do) it was a strong match for one of them: Oxford Blue. Here’s a picture, you decide…

RAF Mk3 helmets were used on my Squadron for ground running of the aircraft by engineers and were life-ex and for ground use only. Usually hand painted and with no mask, just a throat mike.

It’s in one of the B17 films, possibly “The war lover” from memory. Could be “12 O’Clock High” though or one of the others.

Seeing as how none of the regular photographers managed to make it out into the sunshine to capture the first warbird activity (merlin engined) at DX today (perhaps they were all buying groceries/doing their washing/housework/cutting lawns/working etc etc:p) I thought that I’d save the day. Here’s some starting with the Bearcat at 8am. Hope you like them.

Rare gems like that CIA operated Romulan Bird of Prey that came in at the weekend. DCW had his memory card wiped over for catching it on camera. Nifty things those cloaking devices… even works on hangars…:D

My memory is of it being a different shade of green (lighter) the second time it was painted. I think it went a temporary shade of brown after the event at Stapleford Tawney… 😀

I’d go straight for a Scott-wheel conversion, they’re much cheaper in the long run and the tyres work out at about $18 with tube in the US as opposed to the rip off price of about £236 for a Dunlop over here. I doubt you’ll find an original wheel over here for a reasonable price either.

I always remember this stage in Sally B’s career and its exciting flying in the hands of Don Bullock. It’s a shame that she never got to fly in these colours with the turrets fitted for “We’ll meet again”. I always hoped that the film colours with the red stripe would revert to the blue of the Glatton scheme but it never happened. Personally in my opinion she has never looked as good as this since. I wonder what happened to the tail turret she was built with and really should be flying with now. The paint job she wears now is well applied but they really need to get away from trading on that “Memphis Belle” film glory. Even in a basic olive drab scheme thay could do so much with vinyl bomb group markings and change them each season to pay tribute to different units. One would think that US veteran associations would be well up for sponsering this for a season? Oh and put the right top turret back, that’s the B17G one borrowed from the Southend B25 back in 1981…

The main wreckage was scrapped and the cockpit section stored at Duxford for several yerars. It was then sold on to the operators of the airworthy German based T-33 as a proceedures trainer. That T-33 then suffered a belly in at Hahn and was written off itself. I believe the former Black Knight cockpit section is now at a German museum.

Looking at the site on Google Earth shows it cleared of scrap and just some cars there, however it also shows the Blenheim parked outside on the grass at Duxford…

No progress, and believed to be both wearing steel overcoats. Unlikely to be at Legends…
