I think you’ll find it may be off home to its birthplace
Try the series of books called “To sail no more” there’s lots of the best part of the whole 1960’s and ’70’s Royal Navy being ripped apart and turned into tins and razors. Very sad but very interesting. They’re all in them. Bulwark, Albion, Triumph, Centaur, Eagle, Victorious, Ark Royal plus all the wartime ones and Nelson, Rodney, etc etc. Try http://www.navybooks.com and Fan publications for a whole series of stuff on the RN of yesteryear.
Hope that helps

Roobarb. Do catch up old chap. We’ve all gone digital here.
It simply isn’t good enough these days to say, “oh by the way just seen a …. in the circuit. It looked bloody fantastic, can’t share the sight with you you know, dashed film is still in the camera”.
I know how much this distresses you Merlin 70, especially as four of my film pictures made it out of the camera and into the current edition of Flypast, and them being on the first two news pages as well. Quite shocking in the modern age of digital technology. :p
Sorry guys that I didn’t get the Sea Fury id quite right!
Have to go Miss Velma has just arrived!
Tut tut….. and you with a “super-spotter” on hand for guidance:p
Perhaps Bograt was out sharpening his pencil to get the Mustang’s number:D
Ps what was the number for Miss velma I was too busy taking pictures of it landing to write it down 🙂
clearly I would think that the only people that really know what is going on would be the people at TFC.!!
You know what’s going on in your place? What’s your secret, Digby ‘cos we never do at our place! 😀
Everyone at our place seems to like flying XVI TD248. Must be the excellent colour scheme she’s in these days 😉
Yes, yes, of course I know who he is, but I would suggest that despite the press reports and the Biggin commentator we are talking about the facilitator here rather than the end user.
Mark.
You make him sound like a 1950’s Marvel comic super-hero……
“Peter Monk IS The Facilitator“
I can’t wait to tell him his new title next time he pops in 😀
😎 Just to bring us back on thread: Its outside again this week
That’s to make room for the Aurora to have a spruce up before the American Air Museum 10th anniversary event……:D
Someones got to keep you ******s awake in your sleepy hollow 😀
Couldn’t do it down your end as there would be too much dust blowing around and the spiders webs would get tangled up :p
Flying again today and again with John Romain in the drivers seat. ARCO were not directly involved in the engine change as OFMC have their own engineering staff. They did use our tie-down to make lots of noise though 🙂
I think you’ll also find that the Dutch Spitfire MK732 spent time there in 1997 (at least) as G-HVDM and was associated with the current operator of TA805. He looked a bit younger then 😀
WoGB aircraft I saw there were SM969, NH238, PL983 and TE356 all flying and TE392 and Seafire PP972 in store. Great fun trying to get a look into that Hangar 😉
The crane incident was nothing to do with the problems I encountered getting out, as once off site the roads were “normal” for the circumstances. It was the on site lack of traffic organisation I was referring to. Aviaton stalls, well I was refering to sales stalls rather than Sally B type support club sales units. The RAF tac demo? Well personally having spent some time maintaining the E3 Sentry fleet in the past, I am very surprised the RAF has one to spare for performing at airshows, they were at full stretch back in the 1990’s and that was before current overseas commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq. The demo is most probably a feeble recruiting attempt for a career path that these days has not a great deal to offer, hence the shortfall in staffing levels. What was the overall impression of moving the jets to the new parking area at the show? I’m sure it had its appeal to some of the photographers for some taxiing shots?
Although PL983 DID have the four machine-gun look, albeit temporarily, around 1988… 😉
Do you have evidence to substantiate your statement Daz, as having examined the remains of the wings very recently there is no evidence of it ever having had any sort of cannon stub or “four machine-gun look” on the D section of the wings since they were rebuilt by Trent Aero. All of the WoGB aircraft that were substantially completed/flew were fitted with the same fibreglass stub barrels complete with off centre badly moulded gun barrels to my knowledge. Or are you referring to the fact that it was given red patches on the leading edge for “Piece of Cake” ?
Any idea why they restored it with the 4 cannon barrels instead of the two 20mm and two .5s look?
Seems strange. I don’t recall ever seeing a Spit IX/XVI with that set up
I think you’ll find that all of Doug Arnold’s (the original owner after the RAF, Indian Air Force etc) Spitfires bar the PRXI had the four cannon look. Certainly that was the case on NH238, SM969, TE356 and RW386, mind you they were only fibreglass and apparently easily removed with a hacksaw eh Fred? Doug Arnold obviously liked the “Big Weapon” look 😀
Yes both are in the show plus JG891 and TD248. The Buchon and Hurricane should be back from La Ferte late afternon if the weather is still ok. Both are due to night stop at Southend on the Sunday. See the thread for “Hurricane BD707 back at Rochford”. The original BD707 served there in 1941 with 402 Sqn RCAF so it’s quite fitting really.
