SM969 has got the same full armour.
Getting the seat in and out is a two man job,and we have yet to fit the windscreen!!
I have it on good authority that the reason your one takes two to lift it is because you’re usually in it 😀
Sorry for bumping, but any news on this one?
The pilots seat is now fully rebuilt and a wonderful job C.N. has done of it. Now if they can just build up the aircraft around it, we won’t have to worry about any injuries trying to lift it in with that big lump of Tirpitz bulkhead they seem to have fitted on the back! 😀
Vulcan turning up at first pulic show in new sponsers colours overall and everyone getting upset even though its the only way to pay its horrendous insurance and operating costs! How about “K*llogs cereals” – white over-all (anti-flash of course) with a massive chicken on the underside?
How is any show going to be able to buy it in?
14:00 “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Duxford 2008, and from your left The Vulcan.”
14:10 “Right thank you for coming. That’s the conclusion of todays display, but the museum is staying open until 18:00. And please put your spare dosh in the airspace buckets as they are shoved in your face.”
Any idea when it might be possible for Joe public to see her again?
Would like to catch her before she goes back to the states…
I parked it out on the grass for a couple of hours today when we had a move round in the hangar. If anyone was there they would have had a good view of it. We do try to please, despite our “AREA 51” nickname. It should be at DX for the next few weeks, though not neccessarily in the public hangars.
Still here but tucked up in Area 51 for now. Went to Lydd and back today 🙂
Based on owners requirements, ie his initials and using wartime pattern specs, correct paint chips and markings correct to wartime AP. I could have put the wartime codes on as per the original photograph but that is not what was wanted. The TL-B codes are to correct size, layout and colour for the 1944 time period. It is therefore as authentic as can be within the owners requirements.
[It really has not been here long enough for it to be substantially more than that although Roobarb will no doubt be along to clarrify :)[/QUOTE]
As if by magic the shopkeeper appeared……..:)
Right well it actually arrived on 12th January, so that’s quite a while by my counting. It has had a substantial overhaul, with some in depth work on one of the wings in particular. Installation of fuel system for gun bay tanks, Prop overhaul, rads and oil cooler overhauled, new avionics, a lot of work in the cockpit including the fitting of a number of authentic pieces of wartime equipment to improve its standard of authenticity. Some items previously fitted in the cockpit during another rebuild were not correct to the MkIX, and these have been changed. Full span ailerons to replace the non standard D.Melton MkXIV cropped ones. Replacement legs, as those fitted were of the mark V splined type and not correct to this late a MkIX. New exhausts (original and literally still in the Rolls-Royce box and wrappers!), and lots of other things were done. If I told you it all, you might not go and buy the next issue of Flypast, which of course you all do don’t you? It of course arrived in a very dubious glossy cammo scheme to “US Specifications” one might say. This was removed and a new authentic scheme has been applied using an original image of it in 1944 supplied by Mk12, as a basis. As MkV correctly observes it is the first Charles Church built aircraft to wear a scheme of an authentic nature. Now if only we could do that 2-seater!! Today she did two test flights, with only minor trim and radio adjustments needed. My advice to all you photographers is don’t put your camera away for the winter just yet! if you see her take a picture as she isn’t going to be here for long. And for the joker who is waiting in the wings……”No she won’t be at legends!”. Hopefully with some more test flying due later in the week (given the weather) some of you will be able to see her yourselves. I’m sure some won’t like the colours and some will. I like them and I did the design of the scheme for the owner who also likes it, so that’s two of us happy!
Roobarb 🙂
By the way the work was done by ARC not HFL. We used the HFL jigs for the wing work, and one of their guys was seconded for a couple of weeks to help in the latter stages and we are very grateful for the helpful advice given by everyone on the other side of the fence. However it should be pointed out that they are a separate company, who happen to share the hangar and the noise output within 😀
I understand the accident report is due to come into the public domain in the not-too-distant future.
You’re going to get a visit, Mr.P……..;) There’s nowt wrong with MV268 she’s just on her annual. We’ve pulled the carb for a bit of work, which should be completed way before the season begins again.
MV293 or “MV268” which one are you calling it Reggie???:dev2:
I believe MV293 (the TFC MkXIV) has also adopted the “silent front end” modification, so maybe it will be a while before it’s in formation with BWB’s XVIII……..:p
I heard that “Tony DeBruyn” was another of Jeff Hawke’s cover names and both Bronco’s would be off on a CIA mission in Burma soon…….
He does look a lot slimmer these days and he doesn’t have such a full head of hair or the beard. Must be a “new identity” 😀
Excellent news!
So *dons Spitfire spotting hat* that makes it 5 Spitfire Mk.V’s ‘airworthy’ at the moment I believe:
Vc JG891 Tom Blair DX
Vb BM597 HAC DX
Vb EP120 TFC DX
Vb AB910 BBMF Coningsby
and of course now BL628!The other two ‘airworthy but not flown at the moment’ would be:
Vc AR501 Shuttleworth (Currently being refurbed)
Vc AR614 FHC Arlington (Has this actually flown recently?)I think that’s all the Mk.V’s at least!
I’m sure those better informed will correct me 😉
Think you’d better ad the TFC Vb EP120 to your “airworthy but not flown at the moment” list as it was lacking its “loud up-front noise making facility” last week and is by all accounts remaining silent for the coming months………;)
Did Brian also fly this Hurricane at Flying Legends this year? At saturday july 7th I made a close up picture of the cockpit with presumably the pilot in it.
No, it was flown by Alan Walker who is one of the regular ARC/Spitfire Ltd pilots. David “Rats” Ratcliffe was flying in the HAC Hurricane from what I can remember.
I see there is a Yak 52 on our parking plan of participants for the weekend……….
They really do pull out all the stops don’t they. What next, loads of Helicopters re-enacting the Falklands? Oh sorry they did that one in May, how did I miss it?
“New scheme for MK356? ” possibly:D
Just when we managed to eliminate all the UK based silver Spitfires by repaint or export, you give us one of yours to paint silver! Fiendish ploy Fluffy! how about we polish it in bare metal? You must have some Duraglit lying around Coningsby somewhere……..:D
