More interested to know if you matched the varnish chips off the guitar. Hate to think that you would get pulled up for finishing it in the wrong shade.:D
Well I did consider the Nitro Cellulose varnish as rightly pointed out by Stuart, but alas in their vigourous testing Gibson failed to trial it against salt sea spray and it failed to adhere and was prone to blistering in the vicious sun on that part of the UK coast. I have had to use a “modern alternative” that will of course disappoint the purist, but to me it maintains its visual original 1965 finish, whilst like the new Navy Sea Fury paint scheme “being easier to clean” 😀
Actually the predominant colour is based on an Orange Kimono worn by Jimi Hendrix on the Axis album and matched from a colour swatch given to me by Mark 12, as he’d kept it from his days as a roadie with “The Experience”. The wood staining was achieved by a match to a Gibson Les Paul guitar that was used by cas at Knebworth festival in 1979 when he had to don a wig and secretly deputise for Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page who was smitten by a case of “the trots” after eating a not so healthy cucumber sandwich in the hospitality tent. Creasote was of course sourced from the well known supplier “Mr Creasote” for just one waffer mint…………
Sorry I was side tracked about my beach-hut there, of course you all want to know the scheme of the Hurricane don’t you. 😀
Looks really nice! 😀
Naturally your referring to my Beach-Hut and its authentic colour scheme. The Hurricane is from the paint mixing counter at B+Q or am I getting confused…….:D
The Hurricane is now in its new colours and looking a lot different to before. An in depth overhaul has been carried out and the Fabric surfaces (including the fuselage) re-covered in Irish Linen. There is a little while to go before completion and I’m sure that it will be appearing in the magazines soon. Of course that may well be preceeded by someone getting a shot of it outside when we do the ground runs etc and posting it up on the forums no doubt. In the meantime I won’t spoil the surprise of what colours I’ve researched for the owner as I know how you all like to guess! The clue is it was based about 3 miles from where my beach-hut is. 😉
Not aware of it being our Buchon at present, but we are always up for an invitation to attend……:) We have a nice 249 Sqn tropical filter MkVc Spitfire to compliment it as well……..and of course there’s the Hurricane in its new colour scheme!
Mosquito T.III TV959 is at Martham in Norfolk for Paul Allen. See a nice picture of it (;) ) at DX when it came out of store in Wrecks and Relics 19 page 100.
I would put money on MH434 being pretty high on the list and possibly PS853too.
Martin
Wasn’t PS853 on the deck for years in the 1980’s waiting for the Griffon 58 conversion to be sorted out after its original engine made some sort of stopping type noises with accompanying “internal trauma”. I think it might have been calling in at Southend on its way home. It had a sort of glossy PRU blue at the time. Anyway, (gets back on thread!) I think it will be low on flight time due to this unplanned grounding.
Neither was NL314BG “Petie 2nd” of WoGB painted in Olive Drab. This and “Sunny VIII” of Spencer Flack were only used for back of formation shots. I only recall them actually being in one massed take-off from DX, and that was with with the other 5 P51’s, 3x B17’s, the B25, and 3x Buchons on a Friday afternoon if I recall correctly! 🙂
I can’t actually imagine Spencer or Doug Arnold letting anyone near their Mustangs with a spray gun full of OD paint, from what I remember of them both. 😀
We’ve not finished it yet, but it is looking very nice and very different from before 🙂
I believe the Spitfire will be making its French debut and the Hurricane will be seen in its new colours for the first time at a show. 😉
Empire Test Pilots School
Tactical Weapons Conversion Unit
Actually TWCU stood for Tornado Weapons Conversion Unit,
or To Work Continuously Unrewarded………. for those of us that were there 😉
How those Twikyu Lineys slaved to win the cold war for Blighty with their heroic actions on the beaches of Sardinia, the bars of Macrihanish and the pubs of Thetford. Their bravery on the fields of bunging and blanking and whilst yellow peril emtying will not be forgotten. We salute the fallen man A’s and B’s of the Death Camels from Hell, taken from us whilst undertaking heavy surfing in the Chase and we lament the passing of “Downtown 45″….
sadly now just a Pongo Tank park.
What say you Bloodnock ? 🙂
I’m certain it wasn’t G-DAKS as this was still in service as “Mayfly”/TS423 with its long nose. “Air Intra” is the name ringing bells in my memory and I believe Mike Woodley was flying with them at the time. Taking the Dak out of commercial service for “sitting around film work” is what prompted him to acquire a Dak for this sort of work and set up Aces High I seem to remember.
Flying A’s Seafire III rebuild must run a close second!
How about the ex Robs/CC MkIX TE517, or ex WoGB/CC MkXIV MV262? The latter one probably has an “authenticity certificate” saying it is genuinely one of the limited edition “Dave Lees signature range” of Spitfires 😀 :p
What a beautiful Chipmunk. 😎
Yes, superbly repainted at ARC about 6 years ago if I remember correctly….
G-BBND/WD286? We chose yellow for the spinner just to be different and it’s an instant recognition feature. Can’t say I’ve seen another like it. 🙂
Spitfires RW386, JG891, ML407, the Buchon and the TFC Corsair all up at DX today, oh and G-RUNT as well. 🙂
