    [QUOTE=Paul F;1087002]
Who’ll be first to post photos of the event then…..?

    Paul F

My money’s on Darren seeing as:
    A) he was out on the field with the hubble telescope attached to his camera body!
    B) My pictures are on the way to the lab!

However, there were a number of other contenders so we’ll have to be patient for now.

Nice to see JG891 and the Buchon enjoying the March sunshine as well.

RW386 took off from Duxford at 11:34 in the hands of Lee Proudfoot and carried out a successful first flight for nearly and hour. This was its first flight since at least 1952 and was the culmination of a protracted restoration that started at Blackbushe in 1982, and had to endure a long period of containerised storage before being sold and then the restoration could be completed at HFL. Congratulations to everyone involved along the way from WoGB at Blackbushe, through to HFL at Audley End and then at Duxford. Test flying will continue towards the issue of a permit to fly, and then they’ll be the new season to see her out and about. 🙂

As usual, Mark 12, a picture (or two) is worth a thousand words.

It was incredibly great fun replicating Alex’s wartime photograph for him with TD248 and TA805. He was in great spirits and full of wit. He always had great respect for everyone when he visited us at ARC and was always complimentary to the engineers for their assistance. It was thrilling when he flew in IAC161 a few times with us. He was a true gentleman and a fascinating character. It was an honour to have spent time with him.

    Fluffy,

I am puzzled. AB910 with a four blade prop.

Period photographs of AB910 coded MV-T at 53 OTU post July 1944 show the aircraft fitted with a three blade Dowty Rotol broad root assembly. Equally when first ‘civilianized’ as G-AISU circa 1949 it carried the same three blade prop type, carrying this through to the second civilian paint scheme with race number ’82’. By 1950 at Hendon and wearing the same livery, but race number ’40’, a four blade assembly had been fitted, presumably for race performance reasons. This it carried right on through Vickers service, the BoB film and on to the BBMF.

    Mark

There was a letter from the late Alan Wheeler in Aeroplane (about mid-1980’s) explaining the series of events regarding the engines for AB910 and the purchase of it and AR213. I recall he bought a zero time Merlin in a box for £10 then sold the box on for the same price! I think AR213 cost him £25.00.
    I have a copy of it somewhere……
    I’ll start looking!

As for the long exhaust shroud. Does any of the Harvards still use the cabin heater tube incorporated in the exhaust system?

    T J

Yes, all of the British based ones that I’ve been involved with that have the long tube (“Taz”, G-BIWX, G-BDAM, G-AZSC) certainly do as it is a permit requirement to test the inner “Intensifier” tube every year to check for any leakage. If they leaked then the cockpit occupants would get a carbon-monoxide gassing, which isn’t condusive to a long flight! They are great fun to remove if they are coked up! It’s exactly the same type of system on the later RAF operated Chipmunks.

Well it looked much better in those shots, but clearly not BS4800 20 c 40 in the most recent offering. I am glad you are aware of the error and have already taken steps to sort it out. Some others wouldn’t be bothered, it is refreshing to find someone who is-well done Fluffy. 🙂

The red looks suspiciously bright for wartime………
In fact comparing it with the colours that I had matched to wartime chips for LF in the background the Blue looks decidedly post 1946 “Bright Blue” as well.
    🙁

Yes it was. I wonder what happened to the Queen Mary after the Spitfire went to the States?

Very original condition aeroplane, fitted with MkXVI port wing, dismantled and containerised in November 1992. Requires extensive overhaul, stored Greenham Common, owner not interested in selling.

Another of Digby’s cast offs! 😉

That really would look good at DX, full of the earlier period aircraft for example. Mind you it would fall foul of the IWM’s new policy of erecting (v. expensive) buildings that have to be closed when the wind blows ever so slightly, seeing as it would remain open like the other WW1 vintage hangars! 😀

An ideal interlude to visit the toilet, clean the camera, read the programme, eat your lunch, drink a coffee, visit the stalls, phone a friend, queue to get fleeced at the nearest Ice-Cream van, burger stall etc etc 🙂

Maybe it could swap places at Hendon with that other highly relevant Royal Air Force airframe…..the EH-101 PP8 helicopter prototype
