What sort of thing Roobarb! Modifications and upgrades? Or just generall TLC.
Alan
Well I’m sure the new owner and PPS would consider that privilaged information, so let’s just say a lot of TLC and some other considerations that require some engineering application, the result of which should hopefully see this neglected aeroplane put into an airworthy condition befitting the types much loved status in the warbird world and on this forum.
How’s that for a quote 😉
TE184 was dismantled by a team of Duxford based engineers and staff from PPS at Booker over the last two weeks. It departed DX yesterday (Thursday 26th) by road, bound for Booker and an in-depth overhaul. It sounds as if they’re going to do all the things some of us have wanted for it for years. 🙂
Do we believe you? Where is the evidence? 😀
I’m sure it will be in WH Smiths soon enough 😉
Blowing the cobwebs off??
Well it didn’t look too bad sat out on the airfield at 09:00 this morning in the lovely Autumn sunshine with only me and my camera for company 🙂
By the way Bograt you really need to find that scope of yours, no sooner had you posted it was outside and it was inside. Of course it was fortunate I was waving my lens at it :p
According to the CAA website Rob Lamplough’s mark 8 is showing a potential change of ownership in progress and the silver mark 14 RN201 is now registered to Spitfire ltd in Jersey. Have they been sold as well?
One has but I don’t know about the other, I’m sure they’ve both been well photographed anyway :p
The same day it saw mud up to its axles I seem to recall 😉
As the one who researched the scheme and supplied all the drawings and measurements to the painter of TA805 I would like to say that it is absolutely spot-on. I will however check it with a rule the next time it’s back from Biggin Hill. I CAN tell you that the markings on MH434 are about as innacurate as they could get and MKV will be with me on this. The centre portion of the top roundel is far too big and the white on the fuselage is also too large. the codes are too close to the roundels and the colour of the lower roundels is different to the others! The paint shop at Cranwell are not to blame as they were not supplied with any drawings or measurements and are now aware of how wrong it actually is. Bear in mind they usually do Jetstreams etc for the Navy and Dominie’s for the RAF so Spits aren’t the norm! They CAN do a good and accurate job, just look at TD248 (also one of “mine”). They were not supplied with the required info for the MH repaint by the person tasked to administer the job from the DX end, and had only a photograph to work with, so we at Roundel Police HQ just have to grimace at it when it sits beside better renditions of camouflage accuracy. I believe an OFMC operative was made aware, but it’s still not been corrected. 🙁
Now there’s a shock, someone else was at DX at that time with their camera and getting cold as well as me! Didn’t see you Tim as I was down on the tank bank end (and not a windbreak or chained up chair to be seen!) getting a different angle on the proceedings as the Boss got airborne. An interesting sight and sound in the sky. Its been about 6 1/2 years on and off and a lot of head scratching as to why it’s actually so different to the Harvard’s we’re more familiar with at ARC. Even the canopy is not a swappable item, though visually it looks identical.
I think it’s where Bentwing bomber sleeps most of the day 😀
Have you yet politely pointed out to the gentleman that the real PL344 needs its strange ‘reversed grey’ paintwork correcting? If so, I believe the weather is quite pleasant in Florida in the winter.
Believe me he is well aware of this error, and the roundel police have issued a summons for corrective action 😉
There was hardly anybody at Duxford yesterday so i’m wondering if I was the only person there taking any pictures. I was certainly the only person standing by the Area 51 corner when all this was happening.
That’s because I was on top of the tower for the first run and then out on the airfield as the target for the formation for the second run 🙂
The pilot of IAC161 was indeed Cliff Spink and his passenger was the owner of the Global Express (he is also the owner of a number of more interesting aeroplanes 😉 ). There is indeed a planform painting of a full size MkIX Spitfire on the centre lower surfaces based on PL344. The object of the excercise was to get some pictures of the Global and “Three” Spitfire formation.
Lets hope my pictures (on film) come out 😮
The codes of a certain Spitfire might be a clue as to who the new owner of both of these is! 😉
CR-S so who is that then?
Obviously my drawings were mis-interpreted at Cranwell…..It was of course meant to be painted as “CA-S” !!!
I note in the Hurricane picture, Roobarb is checking for typo’s on page 20 of the new Flypast whilst pushing at the same time…..what dedication!

PS: As for ‘TB’ – Ever feel you’ve been cheated? Naughty Roob.
Not sure I’m quite with you there. It’s an authentic scheme that is also in fitting with the owners requirements. In my view evryone’s happy, and it’s not quite in the same vein as the WoGB “D-A”, at least this WAS a real scheme
The yellow primer is covered with a layer of interior green now 🙂
Hope it’s the right shade… there’s “Interior Green Police” out there somewhere 😀
I wouldn’t under estimate Mr Arnold lots goes on behind closed doors that never comes out in the open..
We’re not interested in what’s behind those closed steel doors…..its the numbers on the outside of the 40ft side we like to underline in our notebooks that interest us eh BWB? 😀 :p
