I think he was a diver. This limited his career options. He couldn’t keep diving forever. He seems to bear a grudge against the Admiralty for this.

    He seems to like submarines.

Cheers I remembered he was a MCM but couldn’t remember exactly what.

    Bring it on

The quick article indicates airframe cooling doesn’t mention avionics cooling which is not unexpected, However I cant see any reference in your posts to avionics cooling using the Fuel.
So did I make that bit up??
I cant get the main article to open at mo but thanks for link.

    Regards

I meant no offence to yourself, but as sources go wiki is more reliable.

I will be looking elsewhere for the info because the suggestion it cools the avionics is a new one on me Im interested in how the accomplish that.

Re Boiling fuel in the F22 & other stealth
Its a An exaggeration fuel would not be heated up to boiling, nor is using fuel as a heat exchanger revolutionary, I suspect that the temperature changes would be a few degrees.

Please do not put faith in the Register, its bollox the conclusions are heavily skewed to the authors bias, and factual content is lacking.
Lewis Page is the ex RN guy who seriously believes (or else is an accomplished BuXSh”$ter) that a converted merchant ship would make a much better and cheaper type 23 replacement, completely ignoring a simple truth that it isn’t the hull that’s expensive but the Electronics, the same electronics you would need on you’re cheap ship for it to be effective.
He claims to have left the Navy because he didn’t want to serve on Frigates and Destroyers seriously why join.
Friends don’t let Friends quote Lewis Page

Normally I would not abuse a complete stranger but I make no apologies for my harsh opinion of Mr Page but having read his book and various articles by him. I actually consider him to be a danger as too many people think he is right or indeed honest.

Also To Add some of his wonderful opinions
AH 64 et al are a waste fixed wing is better. Anyone care to escort rotary wing with fixed wing – not simple
Typhoon is a Cold war interceptor that they are desperately trying to justify with A2G fits. (Typhoon was always a Jag replacement)
Tanks are a waste of time.
Frigates are a waste of time
Type 45 is a waste of money the best air defence is a fighter (mostly correct but the 45s there for when the fighter isn’t)
    Hates Royal Engineers
Seems to think our cavalry regiments believe they are still fighting Waterloo, was not true in 1914 (no really what we learnt in school was wrong) and certainly isn’t true now.
Tornado operations in gulf were dumb Tonka is pointless (I’m sure he said it as well as Sharkey)

[QUOTE=Jonesy;2048914]The Scanter 4100 is, anecdotally, a decent piece of kit….certainly its on record that its operators like the capabilities. Would it be sufficient?. Yes probably it would. 997 its also got to be said is going to add at least a couple of mill to the price of a hull thats meant to be cheap. So I certainly understand the view that its price and capability doesnt match the hull at first glance.

For me though there is a lot of sense in accepting that and putting the 997 in regardless. First reason is operational….in this concept of MHPC these hulls will be johnny-on-the-spot in all sorts of places where trouble may brew up.

My thoughts would be provision for 997 but only install it on Clydes replacement and those ships E of S, my reasoning for provisioning would be for easier rotation of huls.

IIRC Correctly the idea of the original RAF Mixed Fighter Force was that Tornado (F3) would fire their Skyflash and sidewinder equipped hawks flown by RAF alley instructors would follow the trails into the soviet bomber formation.

Always struck me as smacking a bit of desperation and conceding that really we needed more fighters.

I have no doubt if a new cold war arose such a concept could be rehashed ,whether it would actually be useful given the preponderance of standoff munitions is another issue.

As for buying Hawk 200 ish for coin I would have to say bad idea, investing in an aircraft that could only perform some of the missions at the expensive of aircraft that could do them all would be a mistake.
Like equipping the RN with lots of heavily armed corvettes or insisting the Army buys far more heavily armoured low mobility mine protected vehicles than it requires or wants, so politicians cannot be accused of not caring, Oh wait a minute…

Question would it be feasible that if (big if really big if hopefully) the UK was involved in another Coin campaign if Spare T1/T2 hawks could not be rotated through Theatre with the pilots maintainers rotating from Typhoon sqns.

    Advantages
    Cheaper operation in theatre.
Reduction on wear and tear on Tiffy / F35.
Two seats often touted as an advantage in coin ops.
    Disadvantages
Reduced pay load and range (may or may not be an issue* depending on theatre of op.
The need to work up Pilots, maintainers and bombheads onto Hawk in the run up to deployment may cost more than whats saved by using the hawk – although in a sustained campaign once everyone has rerolled a few times familiarity could reduce this.
The very real danger that politician’s will see the shiny Fighters sitting doing nothing and conclude that they aren’t required so a squadron could permanently convert to hawk.

    * Many people repeatedly suggested Hawk for Afghanistan, often ignoring the (not unreasonable) counter argument that on a typical afghan summers day , the Hawk would be extremely limited into what it could get airborne e.g 2 anorexic pilots and a gun pod. I believe this would be a similar issue for tucano etc

    Just my 2 cents

Firstly I didn’t quibble the price point if you look at my reply. I agree it has cost waaaaaay more then it should of and I personally think Germany has to carry a significant amount of the blame for that.

Secondly the Typhoon isn’t my personal favourite aircraft. This isn’t fanboyism.

Thirdly, JSR made it childishly personal long ago! His ignorant fanboyish “Russia RAH RAH RAH” comments and utterly ignorant postings have disrupted this forum for way to long and as the moderators won’t ban him I see no problem in being openly contemptuous of his contributions. He has been ripped to pieces repeatedly with his ideas on aerodynamics, technology and global economics by many a good forum member. If he is going to continue wasting our time I am happy pointing out his ignorance.

JSR is not here for reasoned debate, he is here to troll the forum and rub every-bodies noses in his ideas of the Glorious Russia!

C’mon don’t sit on the fence tell us what you really think..

    On Topic

    1) Is there any more word on a 6th squadron RAF Tiffy sqn being stood up or was it just Gossip.
    2) IIRC operational typhoon squadrons were planned to be 15 aircraft, currently they appear to have 12 is this while the fleet builds up or the way of the world post SDSR

    Cheers

The Spiegel might be ok as long as they tackle with subjects that the authors understand. That’s the usual issue with the general press, even more so when they may serve the interest of this or that party and even more so when it is about sales.

The opening part alone is a joke. Everyone with some understanding on the subject recognises what a bank angle overshoot is. But that won’t prevent some of the usual suspects to get particularly vocal about such an article. The really stormy times are yet to come.

I have a problem in that I think news reports should just present facts, Pieces with opinions should be clearly identified as opinion. But my real bugbear is Journalism is investigating and reporting the news to often now they make the news or misrepresent facts badly eg ISRAELI WARPLANES BOMB SCHOOL KILL 5 INNOCENT BYSTANDERS followed by harrowing ordeal for children. this is a fairly typical headline (BBC esp).

Now I have no interest in debating the rights and wrongs of that part of the world nor am I condoning Israeli actions, but when the truth of the story is (often revealed later in the article) that after 3 nights of rocket attacks the Israelis bomb the building the rockets are coming from at 4 in the morning. The building happens to be a school and there are no children there I would like to see a more balanced headline. The headline and focus reeks of bias and or a political agenda and it is not what I want from news.

Apologies to all for the OT posts

OMG another Super Hornet critic. Really? Those links are from an idiot responding(mabye a critic that has no experiance whatsoever or must be a Tomcat fanboy). Really it isn’t a super faliure it’s a great aircraft. Complete BS you had just posted 🙁 Turning, climbing and maneuvering is its key aspect in a WVR engagment. Now move on you delusional critic. Those were from many years ago. Jesus, this is getting ridiculous on every critic i’ve heard on a forum or news sponsoring. 😡

If you want any questions on the Super Bug….. Ask me 😉

It looked to me that the poster was pointing out problems with the development – not with the aircraft today, as an emphasis that no project goes smoothly. Which in context isn’t unreasonable.

I didn’t read the links though I seldom do as they are normally ill informed opinion, I had heard good things about da Spiegal, which sadly don’t appear to be based in reality if yesterdays article is of a typical standard.

Hunter 90 was just a sloppy Spiegel translation of “Jger 90” which in turn was the appreviation for Jagdflugzeug 90 (aka JF90). “Fighter 90” would have been a proper translation, but it just underlines how uninformed and badly written the overall article is. This happens when clueless journalists are writing on specialised subjects.

Im not convinced at the level involved its even a specialised subject which perhaps only emphasise how clueless they are.
I remember the Air france that crashed into the Ocean “It may have exceeded the speed of light” how could people not notice that mistake.

I (probably along with countless others) have in the past enjoyed telling people that the pitot tubes are machine guns (helos), however on one occasion it was taken all to seriously and caused a bit of a furore.

    P.S thanks

Seems all is not well in Eurofighter land……

    http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/safety-problems-eurofighter-costs-soar-amid-mismanagment-a-910231.html

That article is appalling – It has 2 facts then lots of (ill informed) anti Eurofighter opinion, e.g. cant sell any because its outdated etc. – was it written by Lewis page under a pseudonym.

As for Hunter 90 never heard that before EF 2000, Eurofighter (when EF2000 became embarrassing) and of course Typhoon.

What’s the matter with the good old Travellers Cheques ?.
    Jim.
    Lincoln .7

Do not go anywhere near travellers cheques.
I used them as I was informed of places where cashing them carried no charges. So I accepted the slightly worse exchange rate. However the places that Cashed them stopped doing so (sadly only a few weeks before I bought them and nobody updated websites) so I struggled to find anywhere that would cash them, and all charged.

I hasten to add that La poste failed to tell me that they no longer cashed them, until about the 5th branch I visited previously I was told to go to a different branch. La Poste is not renowned for its helpfulness.

It seems not many people can be bothered with travellers cheques anymore.

I was informed that my dog should not have been bought into France (where I now live) and so risked destruction, was very upset but decided that rather than risk the dog I would drive back to UK and leave the dog with my parents. Probably a 5-600 round trip Vs 25E to euthanize the dog. The thought of euthanasia never even crossed my mind let alone because Im going on holiday.
Fortunately the vet was in error she is allowed into France a simple mistake of breed classification.

I myself have had a healthy dog put to sleep and it still saddens me, the dog was badly tormented by children and so took a dislike to them unfortunately it went for the baby when it started to crawl

I struggle to comprehend how anyone can abandon a dog, a cat well they can look after themselves they are very independent creatures and quiet frankly over the years we have acquired several cats that abandoned their owners *. But a dog, a dog isn’t independent a dog is devoted to its master. For that person to tie up the dog then drive off I find heart wrenching, to think the confusion and sense of loss that the dog suffers.

    * And the logic “oh instead of going to the nearest animal shelter I will drive miles down the motorway and then abandon my dog cat elephant”.

Just to clarify I don’t support abandoning cats or any animal at all especially since it takes little effort to drop it off at a shelter. I just feel that for a dog its worse because they are very much reliant on our company others may disagree.

    Apologies for the rant.
