    I have an article from way back when Tony Banfield was O/C, would that be the one? Don’t have the whole magazine, just the article that I kept.

    The October 1944 raid on the Sorpe dam was carried out by 9 squadron and was ultimately unsuccessful because the concrete core of the dam wasn’t breached. Accurate bombing with the MkXIV bombisght though!

    Yes they did, the bomb aimers used various means besides the triangular hand held sight to work out the release point; there wouldn’t have been room if the standard bombsights were retained.

    Mike, it wasn’t just a question of weight saving – the bomb doors wouldn’t have closed around the great girth of Grand Slam and the bomb bay was extended backwards on the ‘specials’ as well. HTH.
