when I were a young lad the family would drive out to London Airport (as it was then) in the Austin 7 and spend the day watching the aircraft and eating sarnies! my brothers and I would start cycling to the airport as we got older just to watch the planes, as we lived in Putney it was quite a ride. never lost the bug since then.

Back to Merlins! I have a Rolls Royce in house magazine with the story of the Crewe Shadow factory somewhere, I shall dig it out and have a read but I seem to remember that it took less than a year from turning the 1st sod to having a running Merlin on the test bed! they were building parts and training local men as the factory was being built around them. they took a core of skilled men from Derby and used them to train and run the new factory. as an apprentice it was for me hallowed ground to walk around that place and still find evidence of the past at Crewe, the engine test cells still had engines running but of the V8 car variety instead of V12 Merlins but I could still dream……………..

As a Rolls-Royce car mechanic I can say that the cylinder liners on the V8 from 1966 up were fitted using the select fit method and on rebuild or replacement liners we measure and grind the liner to achieve the correct ‘Nip’ for sealing at the head. this is just like the video’s posted earlier on the Merlin build. pistons were also select fit being lettered to fit liners of a certain letter size. I don’t think Rolls Royce did things any differently in the car or aviation side of the business……..

As young apprentice back in the 70’s my fitter/master was a polish guy who said that he worked on Spitfires tuning them to chase and shoot down Buzz-bombs anybody got any info on special tuning for buz-bomb chasing?
