As I’ve actually flown as a passenger in a P51 about a foot off the wing tip of Mr Hinton in a P38 They seem to get along quite well! Was I nervous? No not me…………… I was scared sh**less………………………………..

I’m just amazed that with all those people standing around there were no injuries! Almost a miracle as the video’s show plenty of bits flying around and you can hear them hitting the chain link fence in one.

Looking at the “bolt” it appears to be more a retaining pin? when tight do the nut’s tighten against the shoulder of the pin or squeeze frame five together? It’s a fascinating look at the engineering and thinking of those day’s. did any other aircraft of the time use the same wing location scheme?

I’m sure you’ve all seen it but in the video at 48 mins is when they fit the bolts discussed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7Zebpu2nS4

Sitting here typing this I have some sympathy for the tenants and business’s affected by the air show. I run a vintage restoration shop at Sonoma Raceway in the bay area of San Fransisco and have to close my shop for four event’s a year for a total of 12 days, plus severe disruption for the extra 8 days of setup and strike down time. for this period my customers lose all access to my business. The difference is when I signed my lease this was made quite clear and I signed in full knowledge of this. Perhaps if as sounds like the case at Chino this was not part of the lease agreement? Now I love Chino and am a regular visitor to the airport and museum, when I lived in SOCAL I was a paid member of Planes of Fame and even went for a flight in the Mustang. It sounds to me reading the complaint that personality problems have occurred that may well be unsolvable by the party’s involved and court is the only way to deal with it. I don’t think that they have a snowballs chance in hell of winning the law suit but maybe it will change things for the better for the plaintiffs because of it? It just seems such a shame that this has to be resolved in this manner and not by cooler minds in private. I have no affiliation with Yanks museum at all In fact I had a very poor experience there when they were first starting out! These opinions are based purely on a businessman’s take in not dissimilar circumstance. Mainly because this weekend is one of those weekends and I have a customer who wants to pick up his car and cannot!

Surely an aircraft repaired in service with parts from a scrapped air frame is a world apart from a present day restoration? I fail to see the relevance of the comparison. I for one love to see and hear these planes in the sky where they belong. The problem for most of the scoffers is the use of new construction parts, ie parts not made by Supermarine or their subcontractors? As a vintage car restorer I often have the same problems in mind. Case in point being the new MKI mini shells being reproduced by Heritage, if used to produce a car from a logbook but no original car is it an original car? personally no I don’t think it is but it’s still a MKI mini. But if that same shell is used to repair a complete but rusty car then yes it’s the same car. difficult isn’t it? but either way car or plane I like to see and hear both as both fly by at a high rate of speed! I don’t think Mmm I wonder if it’s a “real” one……………………..Paul

Was the wing ever positively identified to an aircraft? I seem to remember a thread about it but can’t find it now?

[QUOTE=Mark12;2379564]It doesn’t seem that long ago that 30 minutes in ‘IDN, hands on and aeros, was a £20 contribution toward the fuel. That is £230 in today’s money.:)

When I flew in the Chino Planes of fame P51 it was $650 for 20min’s I was lucky enough to get 1hour 10min for my $650!!

I always thought the ski-ramp was a later invention for the harrier? but the deck of that carrier had a definite ramp at either end.

Funny I’m just sitting here in California looking through my videos from 91 and there we are at Brooklands, R Robert has come a long way!! Back then there were still bits of concord parts lying about all over the place outside. And nobody seemed to Mind where me and the kids wandered. I miss those days not a HiViz vest in sight and a bit of personnel responsibility required.

See also the Pacific Coast Air Museum at Santa Rosa airport Ca. Very similar situation. Lots of jet age warbirds and very few visitors………

Pima is one of those must visit places. It really is a fantastic place. Although not recommended for a summers day! When I went the temps were well over 100f and the outdoor exhibit tour was a real heatstroke hazard. But all the indoor exibits are air conditioned and very well laid out, the thing I noticed most was the shear space of the place indoor and out. It’s more than a one day visit to do it justice really.
