we have been in contact with the guys at shuttleworth during the restoration so far…we are very keen to reunite the 2 aircraft and hope that when Black Magic is flying we can take her to old warden!!! What a sight that would be 🙂

enough of her is original for the CAA to deem her authentic and allow G-ACSP registration to be retained. Parts of the fuselage structure and wing ribs are original, however….how safe would you feel flying with 73 year old spruce that spent 40 years stored outside in Portugal?

the long term plan has always been to get her ready in 5 years. The spruce for the new main spar is on order and we are hoping to be able to get this sometime this year (spruce is harder to get hold of in the lengths required than you would think).

Thanks for the comments texan…sorry ollie the timing was not deliberate. The dates were decided before I realised the significance. If you look on the site there are other dates…about every other month.

I don’t think that this name change would succeed. I am certain that the name would be shortened in every day use to Mitchell airport (unofficially of course) and Mitchell airport already exists which could potentially be very confusing!!!.

Mitchell Airport, Milwaukee, WI, US. Named after one of their most famous sons…General Billy Mitchell. I stand to be corrected but I believe the B-25 was also named after him, they have a B-25 mounted outside the airport, and he was pretty much the father of the US Air Force as we know it today (didn’t he also get ridiculed by his superiors for predicting the attack on Pearl Harbour by the Japanese many years before it actually happened?).

I have never seen AP1086…does it list manufacturers of equipment or just what aircraft stores reference numbers refer to? I am hoping that 26BX/3210 may have a supplier against it (which would more than likely be the same supplier as 26V/9882 as 26BX was for tubes greater than or equal to 2″ OD and 26V was less than 2″OD). Did you get your copy of 1086 from the RAF museum? is it a large volume?

I haven’t come across 1086…can you enlighten me as to what this is? Cheers

Stores ref 26V/9882 Part No M.960 and Stores Ref 26BX/3210 Part No T.D.1035

These are the original parts numbers for 2 different hand operated tube squaring machines.

That one is Roger Marleys example. The cockpit is built the same way as Shorehams was. It uses a mixture of recovered parts and scratch built. The rear fuselage and tail are completely scratch built and although I haven’t spoken to him in a while I believe that he recently took part in a recovery to get a Sabre engine for his project. Remarkable job…he told me he wasn’t going to go past the cockpit but he just can’t seem to stop!!! Don’t know if he is going to attempt the wings.

p.s. you may have seen it photographed in Flypast a few years ago at the Duxford Typhoon day…he bought it down specially for the veteran Typhoon pilots and he was rewarded with a photograph of Bee Beaumonts panel being held up next to it (R7752) and all the veterans signed the rear of the cockpit (you will see that it is always covered with plastic just behind the canopy)

When I first saw it I had only just started researching Typhoons…even back then it looked like there was something wrong although I could not put my finger on it. It was later on that I found out that car exhausts were used so I had to take my hat of to the guy that put all the work in!!! When I spoke to him (without my notes I think his name was Barry Field) he also added that the measurements used for the tubes were ‘educated calculations’ based on the parts that they had recovered (not having access to the Duxford example to measure).

If you know Hawker products you can spot it quickly otherwise it is a v. good musuem piece!!!

There are lots more parts in existence than you may think…in fact if I were able to pool all the parts that I know of then a complete centre section (nose to tail) could be built, if the rumours are ever confirmed and the wings turn up then even a complete aircraft. Will this ever happen? I am ever the optimist…one day!!! 🙂

The Shoreham cockput was completed using car old exhausts (with recovered brackets) and the measurements were not accurate.

The Sabre sold at the same auction was a very corroded sea recovery and remained in the UK, although where it is at the moment is anyones guess.

    BlueRobin,

I was a little upset with a couple of the comments that you made about the restoration of Black Magic. I am the secretary for the group and although cash is always a problem for all restorations there is certainly no shortage of willpower, enthusiasm or manpower (until we have taken delivery of the spruce for the main spars we have enough manpower to complete what we needed). Who took you round the comet restoration area during your visit? Why did you come to these conclusions? (any rash negative comments can have major impact on our ability to raise funds to complete the restoration). Please feel free to contact me via PM if you do not feel comfortable answering my queries in the open.

Certainly looks Typhoon…and yes they are big!!! It could well be a recovered item but more likely that it was replaced on the landing ground because of damage received and left (like the tail plane that was once at shoreham that was found in a hedge in France that bordered one of the landing grounds) or recovered from a scrap yard. There are better, more complete, ones around for the money being asked for this but it is just a question of how much you want it!!

Thanks for the replies…I thought it looked a bit too good to be ‘fly tipped’. Glad that it is back with the ATC unit.

Dave T…yes I am in the Lichfield/Staffs area.
