p.s. oag…
Yes that is still the current address.
DH88…
oag…that would have been my dad you spoke to (also involved in the project).
Bruce…just confirmed that it is the hydromatic type that we are after.
Props…
Bruce,
I believe Hydromatic but I will have to double check on that one…I will get back to you.
Black Magic…
As well as my work/research with Typhoons I am also involved with this project (comet racer project group secretary). We are talking years before Black Magic is in the air but as the pictures show work is progressing now, the tailplane is almost complete and we have just finished compiling the cutting list for the wing main spar and we are currently looking into a number of suitable suppliers for material. Hopefully a little later this year we can start working on the jig for this complex job. We also have 3 Gypsy Queen engines in RAF packing crates sitting in the hangar. 2 are time expired and one has some time left, they were all meticulously packed and inhibited by the RAF and they are believed to be ex queens flight. We have opted for these engines because they will not detract from the exterior view, the spares are more readily available and the props can be feathered in case of engine failure (the extra power makes up for the slight increase in weight). I am also in charge of the web site and have to update it over the next week or so for new dates for open days and new pictures. All are welcome to turn up on the open days.
We have an advantage with the rebuild as everything can be handled (paperwork wise) by Airspeed Aviation as Derby.
Dave
p.s. if anyone knows of the whereabout of DH Heron props and hubs let me know
Super Sabre…
Thanks for the replies…will pass on the info.
Old wiring looms…
Many of the vintage cars use old style wiring looms and they are starting to be remanufactured. Have you thought of this industry as a source? Look through any of the classic car magazines.
Target Tug Schemes…
In general I think the target tug scheme looks good and it esp. looks good on the Mosquito. There are plenty of Mosquitoes world wide that are painted in various schemes so why not the TT scheme on the Duxford machine? I do have a problem with the Tempest though…a one if a kind on display and I think it should be in a final WWII camo scheme!!
EVeryone has their own opinions though…at least the aircraft survive and are being looked after!!
Typhoon Blind Flying Panel Question…
The blind flying panel in the hendon Typhoon (and I seem to remember the Duxford Cockpit aswell) has the curved top. In addition to this it has horizontal and vertical curves in between the instruments (probably not the best description ever!!!). I haven’t seen this in any other panels and I certainly have never seen one for sale. Was this the ‘Swaging’ that puukka described on the Mk II 6A/1336 panel? What else were they fitted to and does anyone know where I can get one?
re: Engines…
David,
They don’t happen to have a Sabre in their collection? Haven’t heard of these engines before…..
Surviving Scrap Yards…
Do any of the scrap yards that had Typhoon/Tempest bits and pieces still exist or have they all been cleared? As has been the case all through my project I am always a couple of years too late!!! Had I started in 1996/7 I would probably have made it to some of the yards….
Willy,
Thanks for the offer. I haven’t heard anything yet so would appreciate anything that you can find out. Not sure if John Starkey of Ferrari racing/books is the same one but it can’t harm to ask him.
Dave
Gloster….
dhfan,
The set that BAe have came from Kingston-upon-Thames. It is a good question about Gloster and one that I have never followed up…may be worth some investigation (unless anyone else knows!!!)
Contact…
Jonathon,
The guy I was originally told to ask for was Chris Chippington. Obviously I found out that he no longer worked there when I called and was put through to someone else by the receptionist. I can’t lay my hands on the name of the person at the moment, although she was very helpful at the time. She was going to deal with finding out how much it would cost to remove the perspex for the day.
Will look through my book tonight to check for the name(s)
Dave
re: Contact…
I will dig through the notes I have at home re people I have spoken to at Duxford.
Dave
Tiffy…
Cees,
When I can get the accurate measurements of the main spar lugs then I can actually start putting things together. I have been talking to some other people at Duxford in the hope I can get permission to do some measuring of their cockpit (they did say that they can organise having the perspex removed if I pay for the time taken) but they have not given me a quote for this yet.
Drawings would be an even better start…I even have all the drawing numbers I need!!.
Jonathon,
Do you have an electronic list of the drawings you have for the Hurricane? There are numerous drawings that are shared between the Hurricane and Tornado/Typhoon, there are some A.Std drawings that are shared from early aircraft through to Tempest/Sea Fury construction.
