Thank you…my first attempt at such a thing. I hope more news will come out later in the year 🙂
There happens to be a ‘small’ article in the latest magazine from nz…it may have been seen for those that have already received their copy (before anyone asks fp did want an article but no replies after the first mail received….so missed out there)
sent you pm
Thanks 🙂
The rafm have 3 as far as I am aware….I have seem 2 at Stafford and there is the 1 they have out on loan. They are all recoveries with a pair from the same Manchester but not sure about the third.
Those part numbers look hawker ish to me. I don’t have drawings after 164615/6, this particular one is P.1052 with sea fury and tempest just before.
This may supply some pointers..
Anything typhoon that you are aware of?
Do you need provenance as well? As far as I am aware there are very few (if any) specific data plates on a typhoon or tempest….you have to rely on the original scheme or hopefully stencils around from mods done at the makers..
Strange where the serial came from…Iit is the ex ted Sinclair cockpit (tempest v) and he didn’t find the serial and had it for many years!
Don’t all wooden aircraft use a modern equivalent glue? I know the comet racer has glue that is far better than the original as things have come a long way since the 30 ‘s…It more than likely comes down to cost incurred.
In a typhoon airframe for instance if I wanted a different spec tube it would have to go through all the stringent checks the caa have, which incurs huge cost. However I could not share that cost with any other projects to reduce the outlay as each project will have to go through exactly the same checks. It would make things a lot cheaper to do it once….Perhaps it can change 🙂
Seems a strange coincidence that all manufacturing equipment and engineering drawings(where known) were quickly destroyed as soon as it was possible after the takeover. Napiers were innovative and the sabre could cause serious damage to the merlin business…rolls needed the income to finance the growing jet arm so to lose anything to the sabre or indeed napiers would have been disastrous.
No conspiracy theory as it was business to rolls….and they were worried by napiers.
‘for heaven’s sake’….read the post or does ‘(Rolls Royce)’ hide too well?
Here we go again with the ‘reprinting’ of myths regarding the sabre. At the end of the war the sabre could easily reach its servicing schedule (unless run flat out on v1 attacks when all other engines also had problems when red lined for periods of time).
The sabre was used into the 150 ‘ (not scrapped immediately post war) aand wasn’t one of the main reasons it phased out because a certain company bought napiers…I have read documents to say purposely to stop the sabre as it was a superior product (rolls royce)
Wasn’t there some speculation about a group in the UK having done a deal to buy this and have it finished by Glyn? I guess this has fallen through…would love to see a mosquito fly in the UK. …
My uncle in Australia was a mate of Tom hall, he sent me a copy of his book and then followed up with a signed second copy. I may still have the unsigned copy around, I will take a look if there is no luck from anywhere else.
As an aside it is unfortunate that tom passed away a number of years ago. What’s your father’s name by the way?
