Typically I am out of the country with work and the magazine arrives at home….always the way 🙂 I have seen a picture of a Sabre hung on a wall in a ‘German Museum’ with the engine mounth…is this the engine you refer to in the Technical Museum Good Vibs? If it is that is the first time I have had the museum name confirmed….just to be a real annorak I belive it was Tempest 🙂 Would be grateful for any more details on the museum or particularly the current status of the engine? anyone been there and have pictures?
Cheers
Dave
I picked up a bag of spanners this afternoon. Section Ref. 36M = Napier Sabre engine spares and Napier engine tools.
This is a 1/4″ BSF spanner and there’s a few other sizes, too.
Lovely! :love-struck:
Very nice find, how many Napier spanners were in the bag?
When I finally locate a Sabre for my project (notice when…always remain optimistic!!) I will have to see if you are offering a rental service 🙂
That would be some feat carrying all drawings on linen, having dealt with a few over the years 11,500 would weigh a little. I had forgotten that the HP drawings were A0 but even so 4 tonnes of them would be a large number, I am not sure if they were ever catalogued by the IWM but would like to see a list of what they contain.
You probably mean all known *surviving* drawings. (apart from the few odd ones in private hands).
I assumed that ‘surviving’ would have been inferred, after all HP drawings that didn’t survive could not be there. I was told that there were 4 tons of drawings loaded onto the truck and ‘deposited’ at the museum, seems alot of drawings to me so they must cover a large portion of types. In terms of getting a feel for numbers of drawings that may have been moved, I had 11,500 and the only reason one person couldn’t carry them was due to awkward size and not weight.
A number of companies are known to have microfilmed some or all of their surviving drawings back in the 50’s & 60’s, these included Hawker/Sopwith, Dehavilland, Airspeed, Handley Page, Avro, & Bristol. Whether all these microfilm/microfiche cards still exist is another matter.
I have never heard of Blackburn’s, General Aircraft, glosters, English Electric, or Armstrong Whitworth’s doing this, but we can all live in hope that they did.Bob T.
All HP drawings are now with the RAF Museum (as of earlier this year)
I have been trying for years to find someone that would be able to confirm what BAe have, or don’t have, regarding Hawker drawings. 10 years and nothing….would be most interested if anyone is able to at least confirm one way or another what they have.
bCees,
We were there a 3 years ago and I would definitely recommend taking a trip out to Ta ‘Qali for the museum there….a lovely place the sun always makes it feel so much better 🙂 as everyone else has stated a day at valletta is a must, you could probably spend alot longer there. It certainly gets you thinking when you see the scars on the buildings, the harbour is something else aswell.
We never thought of going to Malta before, it was a last minute decision based on a recommendation from the travel agent and I would definitely recommend it!!!
ahhh….may be out of my price range if it is going to be sold on by Graham. Will have to ask the question.
Didn’t get to go to this one unfortunately and with my interest in Typhoons it was a shame I missed out on an opportunity with the canopy. Does anyone know if it sold? anyone know who the seller was? You never know it may be someone who posts on the forum…
Thanks for all the information in the ORB. It is a coincidence that Chris House joined 175 Squadron as one of my Uncles friends in Australia is Tom Hall, published a book on his wartime Typhoon experiences with 175 Squadron. He sent me a personal copy of his book (1st and 2nd edition), assuming he was still with the squadron he may remember Chris House (you never know).
ericmunk: the fuselage is an amazing survivor….it seems to have literally been unbolted and is complete with the brackets to attach to the cockpit. The paint is still original on the one site and it still has the flak holes and scars from the forced landing. There were more parts of the Typhoon at some point but unfortunately they were lost/borrowed/taken.
Interesting picture of the centaurus, I have seen that one before but can’t remember any of the details from the time. Where is/was that centaurus? Tempest perhaps?
He did have at least 1 elevator from memory
Hi,
I remember that one, I have a couple myself with skins on. It was definitely a tail plane with flak hole(s) in the leading edge and the original paint.
not sure if Roger still frequents here but on the day I was standing next to him and I think it went too high for him aswell. I can’t even remember what it went for in the end, I switched off after it had reached my limit. The mystery buyer could well be the man I am after….if you can remember any details then I will try and get in touch with him. Even if he didn’t buy it then if he is a Typhoon/Tempest guy then it is always good to know. It also means I wasn’t going mad over a tail plane existing somewhere….
Its one of those times where you wish you had taken a picture, it was early in my interest in Typhoons and just didn’t think that I wouldn’t come across it again. I was wondering if it ever went to Brian Barnes in Coventry as I believe he was at the auction. I have not been able to get in contact with him to find out though.
