Farmair did indeed work out of Eastleigh in the early 60s. They were based in the ex Saunders Roe blister hangar. The fleet comprised Super Cubs G-APLY G-APPI and G-APVR. These were the “working” a/c and looked and smelt like it !!! Farmair also operated G-ARGV which was the “hack” and executive transport: this a/c was clean and not fitted with spray bars or hopper. I had a feeling there was a fourth “working” a/c but I cannot trace the registration at the moment.

A company called Flying Farmers operated out of Portsmouth around the same time with G-APUI and G-APYR………..

    Planemike

Here’s two of them from my files, probably taken late 50’s but don’t know where.

    FAIRIES

This was the old Heston Aerodrome, now has the British Airways Concorde Club – staff club built on what was the aerodrome, as Joe said, the buildings are now gone and that area redeveloped. I seem to remember the BOAC club building going up at the beginning of the sixties, being renamed Concorde at the end of the sixties. I think that the airfield was dead by about the mid fifties, probably being too close to LAP and the main approach for No 1 runway, other than Richard Fairy’s commuting helicopter each day.

    Piaggio’s

May I join in guys, very nice photos, could I offer two photos from my collection, the original P166 demo unit I-GULL and a P136 G-APNY. I know that I-GULL was taken at Croyden, PNY no real idea but could have been Croyden again going by the hangers. But apart from this I’m afraid that I cannot help at all with the original question.

Never heard of them, AOL was too slow, cable is better if you have it in your area, I have had BT for last 3 years, thought that if they run the telephones they might be better than most – wrong!! – but changing over with business line, emails, etc, does not bear thinking about – hoping they will install cable in our area at some stage (Stonehenge) – but guess they are scared of what they might find!.

What made you marry one of Gaddaffi’s men?

    Cheers Brian.

    Wankel Engines

A Wankel Engine is a Rotary engine, it does not contain any crankshaft or pistons nor does it look like a normal internal combustion engine either externally or in its design.

If you imagine a triangular sponge baking tray, with a hole in the middle for a drive shaft coming up through and connecting to a three bladed rotar with seals on the end which sweep round intaking fuel/air mixture in one area, exploding in next area, exhausting in third area, etc..

This is obviously a very crude outline, to understand rotary engines you must read some books on engine design, they do have a number of advantages, size and smoothness of running among them. Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting Brian . Were the house colour’s red/silver ?

I would say that’s a good guess, but as I took these around 50 years ago, the memory has faded! – I learnt to fly in a T21 and about 5 years ago went up in one again, wonderfull open cockpit, but useless for spraying!

I had recently joined this company and was standing in the queue in the canteen, behind me someone was waffling on and on about something, for some reason I said – without looking round – ‘why don’t you go and join Snow White’ – then turned round to find the small guy from accounts with the full bushy beard and pebble glasses – the ideal candidate! – leaving me trying to say ‘Hello Ian, I did’nt know it was you ………dig hole….dig deeper ……

    Cheers Brian.:D
