Bit of luck getting G-ANBG, only took 1 roll on the Northside….became G-APLL
The DC-7C has radomes top and bottom….1 story is that it was connected with French nuclear tests, another that it was for rocket/satellite tracking
Interesting – in the meantime for no good reason, but I think you’d like it ;:D
Hi Mick, always thought that the Caravelle should have been fitted with cannons, and the way Alitalia pilots used to handle them, I think they thought they were. NBG – I have kicked myself for a long while for not getting one of her, a beautiful shot of Mcmillan by the tail, do you know what they re registered her as?, that must have been the fastest piece of paper in the ARB at the time! – what’s the white lump on the 7C?
Cheers Brian.
Hi Jon, Thanks for that idea, hows the Prince of Darkness getting on?
Cheers Brian.
Thanks Mick, you have some fantastic sources! As with Pagen01 I had not realised that the RCAF was still flying the Comet 1 in 1960, I was’nt aware that they had modded any either. I wonder if there is a list anywhere ………
Cheers Brian.
Hi Simon, just to comment – having read through your opus – its magnificent, the standard is easily equal to the treatises you see published as definitive statements of various aircraft. The amount of data is massive, I can see why its taken 5 years – well done.
Cheers Brian.
SMOKIN’ ORIGINS
I worked on the aircraft in the main hanger block at LHR for BEA 1961 to 1972 – then, when flying, you could smoke anywhere on the kites – because the smoke recirculated in the air con, anyone who did not smoke had no choice but to join in.. So the seating was split into smoking and non smoking sections and the aircon split accordingly. Two cost benefits emerged, where you were not self insuring, insurance premiums went down, but also the aircon filters at the front non smoking end, did not need changing anywhere near the previous schedule, saving on labour and material costs.
Subsequently as society became more anti smoking, and also the smoking sections on the kites were getting to be a block of fumes, a total smoking ban came into being. By this time the smoke was also affecting seats and cabin fittings, wall and ceiling panels were needing to be removed and chemically cleaned during a major maintenance – so more cost savings appeared and no more frequent aircon filter changes. Then it was realised that the aircon could now run with less heating etc., saving fuel.
This is now a winner. The fire risk is of course less, but as all the fabrics, plastics, etc.. used are non-flammable or flame retardent, it is not seen as a major problem. There is potentially more danger from idiots using mobile phones and laptops during takeoff and landing, screwing up part of the electronics or landing system – if you don’t believe me, check out some of the specialist EMC/EMI journels as to what can happen. You can fire missiles by accident with an errant pulse! – there went the neighbourhood!!
Cheers Brian:D
Great series of shots and techniques, nice to see modern aircraft photos properly composed and thought though, it is something that is very difficult to achieve. The idea of tailfeather comparisons is another very neat idea – keep it going.
Cheers Brian Doherty.
Hi Simon,
Serendipity!! – I am in the process of scanning my old negs into the system, last night the final strip was 6 negs of this, LAP around 1960 I would guess. The quality of the photos is not any good as too far away, scratched and raining. I must go to your website and peruse.
Cheers Brian. 😉
Given that the buyer is a ‘Corporate Finance and Investment house’, without any known involvement with aviation and, the target, Piper, has ‘a strong balance sheet’ and the stated aim is to take it into new product markets, that it is not familar or involved with, nor structured to deal with, how long would you give before assets are sold off, financial restructuring is carried out and the debt laden remains are given chapter 11. I only hope that I am wrong.
Cheers Brian.:D
Some nice shots there, the air to ground were very good, keep going!!
Cheers Brian.;)
Lands End/St Just?? Sennen LB is nearby…
Perfick! – lovely little Airport (Its got customs there – or used to have), Lands End post office just down the road (If they hav’nt shut it) to send postcards from and a small bar/tea room – what more could you look for – if you miss it you end up in the Scillies as a nav cross check (risk assessment for ‘elf & safety).
Cheers Brian.:D
How big was the Imperial Airways photo library? did it come from Brian stainer/….. I found a load of Imperial photos in the US Library of Congress online photo collection and edited them into a FLICKR album….Imperial Airways Palestine will probably get you there…..I enjoyed a swift look at your albums
I’ll PM you sometime in the next few days. No Brian Stainer was not involved.
Brian.
Hi Michel, where can I view your albums?
Brian.
I remember Brian Stainer on an Ariel Arrow….gave up taking my own pics because his were so good!
Funny enough, thats what started me on this forum to find out anything about Brian, who I knew reasonably well. As with you, I stopped bothering with LAP after a while, because Brian was so good and concentrated my efforts on the small airfields. You should still be able to see my thread re Brian on Civil Aircraft images. Also I posted some photos on there under thread FIFTIE’S ISH PHOTOS which may interest you.
Brian.
p.s. I had an Arrow as well!!:D
