And yes the USN also downed an Iranian airliner in 1988. The only difference in the Russian case was that the airliner had strayed off course by some distance.
Soviet air defence forces also shot down an Aeroflot Tu-104 in 1962 and a Korean Airlines Boeing 707 in 1978.

@Rii, The F-35 is a bad example, not because it is a good or a bad analogy, but because there are dozens of threads all over defence fora with people arguing their hearts out about how good or bad the F-35 is. People tent to be a bit jumpy when F-35 is even mentioned 🙂
The F-35 is a bad example because it’s an overcited example of a complex and technically ambitious project that suffering from overruns and other problems. But there are other problem child projects too, which one could cite.
I did not intend to suggest that and have clarified my post accordingly. What is true is that all those millions of lines of code in the F-35, whatever their other merits, will inevitably create vulnerabilities and failure modes that did not previously exist, which is why development and testing of such functions has proceeded at a snail’s pace and been the dragging foot of the F-35 program for some time now. I would’ve thought anyone even vaguely connected with modern software development (as in simply being an informed user of even e.g. a smartphone) would appreciate both the difficulty and scale of the problem how it is a function of modern systems complexity, and the partly reactive nature of finding and fixing bugs, which in turn ties into experience and thereby reinforces the eminent suitability of the 1991 Gulf War as the relevant point of comparison for Russia’s recent missile attacks. US missile reliability did not improve simply because more powerful hardware and high-level programming languages became available over the years, but because they had ample opportunity to observe what went wrong and to fix it.
It doesn’t matter how many million lines of code are in an F-35, ist it a reliable and safe aircraft or not? How lines of code does today’s Boeing 787 employ, compared to a 1962 B707? Which is the safer and more reliable plane? I bought a new laptop computer a few months ago – it’s got a lot more file storage, processing power and RAM than 10 Apollo moon programmes put together – it’s a lot more reliable than any 1960s spacecraft as well.:)

Precisely. If the Russian AF has something to learn from the boming in Syria, technically wise, they will learn it – who is doubting that (and what’s it got to do with the F-35 operational record anyway?).
My analogy was deliberately broad. In many cases the F-35 is performing the same tasks as an F-16A … in ways that are far more complex and hence failure prone. The braking system in a modern car is vulnerable to all sorts of largely computer-related failure modes that a car from 40yrs ago does not have to worry about. Any number of examples along similar lines could be found. There may be good reasons for such increased complexity, but this does not change the fact that the more advanced and complex system is subject to new and exciting failure modes that may render it less reliable at performing basic functions (in this case, stopping the car on command) than older systems. Would the recent A400M crash have occurred if the aircraft in question was a C-130H? The answer is no: the cutting edge A400M failed at the basic task for any aeroplane of avoiding unintended intersections with the ground, and this failure was a direct consequence of increased systems complexity and the new and exciting failure modes thereby enabled and multiplied.
Do you seriously think that an F-35 is going to be less reliable than an F-16A or F-4E? The F-35 has already flown over 30,000 hours in testing in the last 9 years- how many have been lost? Do you raelly think that cars and airliners from 40 years ago are safer and more reliable than today’s cars and aircraft?

But conservative Iranian media described the reports of missiles landing in Iran as “psychological operations by the US against Moscow”.
“Since Russia began its operations in Syria, Western media and officials have launched an all-out assault against Moscow,” the Fars News Agency, thought to have close affiliations with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, said.
So at least the Iranian media media is trying to say that something did happen in Northern Iran a few nights ago. What do the mean by “psychological operations by the US against Moscow”?

No Stingers in Syria – plenty of other types of anti-aircraft missiles though. American policy in Syria always seemed very confused – this decision just goes to prove it.

Eventually such a low and slow target is going to be taken out by a) an RPG or b) a wire-guided antitank missile. It’s only a matter of when. So it is strange that they should allow such vulnerable flights.
