I notice in that video that none of those Hungarian MiG-21s were carrying any kind of payload what so ever, when taking off and landing on that field. I’d imagine this rough-field capability was only to be used in emergencies, flight diversions, etc, and when flying light?

Proves nothing, just because a missile radar system gets a lock-on, doesn’t mean that the missile will ever hit the target – otherwise most anti-aircraft missile systems would have achieved 100 PK rates.

And you still have not answered the question – why the F-14 and f-4 can’t shoot down a MiG-25RB – but MiG-25/31 can certainly shoot down a SR-71 flying up to Mach 1 faster than the MiG-25 recce?
I will explain to you why it didn’t happen. first open google map and check Abu Ubaydah air base on the map N32 28 45 E45 46 17 and see how it’s close from Iranian border, while the Iraqi MIG-25RB’s take off they start to climb up to 21 Km over Kut city, then they heading out with Mach 1+ or 2+ to Iranian airspace, with good prior knowledge of Iranian radar sites coverage area they do avoid any spotted and heading toward to their targets while Iran didn’t had AWACS, in this case the Iraqi MIG-25s will reach the target without alarm Iranian air force, even if the Iranian AF spotted it will be too late to take off and intercept them because any Iranian F-4 or F14 pilot sit in the cockpit need at lest a 3 to 4 minutes to take off, plus long time needed to reach 21 Km altitude? in this time the MIG-25’s finished the duty and turn back with Mach 2+, even if the Iranian F-4 or F-14 meet the Iraqi MIG-25’s in the sky they would be unable to shot him down because Iranian pilots didn’t equipped with flight helmet high attitude nor high altitude anti pressure suit add to that Iranian aircraft whether using AIM-7 Sparrow or Phoenix 54A missiles they can’t lock or hit him snap up like this.
With all that the three MIG-25 pilots returned from captivity explained their causes of down was SAM.

What you say could also be applied to the old MiG-25 vs SR-71 arguments – the American spyplane was pretty much invulnerable to the MiG-25 and MiG-31 it seems.
That is pretty much the same question that comes to my mind when allied losses during the Gulf War are discussed. Whatever plane was lost was automatically attributed to SAM or AAA. Even in case of Scott Speicher’s Hornet it took years to claim a Foxbat kill.

F-104 did not have any meaningful speed advantage over its adversaries (especially the MiG-21).
Yes, both aircraft had top speeds, when clean of around mach 2+. Actually carrying useful payloads, and for useful ranges I’d guess that the Starfighter had the advantage. Wasn’t the F-104 the faster climber?
And thats all proof we need that speed is the single most important aspect of a fighter. 😉

A MiG-25RB flying at ‘Mach 2+’ would certainly be a difficult target to intercept – but perhaps it’s quite possible with an F-14? Why do people in Iraq believe it was shot down by SAM missile and not by an Iranian AF F-14? Which type of SAM missile do the Iraqis claim shot down the MiG-25RBs?
We know that T-50 will have range of 1500km on supercruise and 3500km at subsonic.
Which supercruise? At mach 1.2, or at mach 1.7? You can go an awful lot further if you choose the slower speed. 3500km is pretty close to airliner territory.
An armed F-15A does fly faster than Mach 2. In interceptor configuration with 4 Sparrows, top speed is Mach 2.2 in pursuit mode. That is for a standard day, in cold North American or European skies, surely some more is possible.
But armed with Sparrow missiles only, without Sidewinders, and without drop tanks?
I think you are guessing – but generally speaking clean aircraft are faster than well armed ones… So who has got the max speed of an F-16E toting half adozen or more AMRAAM and external fuel tanks?
Come to think of it, I read recently that the top permissable speed of a fully armed and fuel-tanked air-superiority F-15C was mach 1.78. What’s the top speed of a similarly configured F-16 (as opposed to a clean F-16)?

I’ve always considered the Sikorsky S-62 an interesting curiosity, strange but attractive machine.
If at least the F-35 were armed with excellent AAMs in the class of the meteor, and if it had internal WVR missiles to keep it stealthy, that would compensate for its relative inferiority in terms of aerodynamics. It won’t be well armed until the mid 2020’s when it gets the successor of the AMRAAM and/or WVR capable missiles ( CUDA… ), and more than 4 internal missiles.
In the meantime I should think the AIM-120D and AIM-9X arming the F-35 are as about as advanced as any other fighter’s weapons – who’s got better missiles on their planes?
US military want a bomber in the first place, and the F-35 fits that bill. For A2A they will use other types.
I’m sure the F-35 will be successful in the A2A role, for the usual reasons that American supplied aircraft have been successful in that role for the last 75 years or so.
