    I think it is an interesting question as to which baseline design — T-50 or J-20 — is more readily adaptable to a dedicated A2G variant in the form of at least increased payload capacity and flexibility, increased range, potentially side-by-side seating, etc. I think it is entirely possible that such projects will be pursued in future, as a cost-effective way of leveraging sunk R&D, systems commonalities, etc. in the manner once proposed for FB-22.

    Isn’t the J-20 the bigger aircraft? It will depend ultimately on which aircraft will finally have the most powerful powerplants, I suppose.

    But it’s like some of the p!ssing contests between Rafale and Typhoon – it all depends on which aircraft has been cleared to carry widest range of munitions – avionics essentially.

    Yep, thats what u end up with, when u start of with a ******* design that consist of Navy, Marines and USAF requirements. Poor F-35 indeed.

    It’s the aircraft the American military wants – I don’t suppose they are complaining?

    Poor F-35, you would swear it was useless in the air-to-air role, to judge by some of the comments on this thread. No mention of the J-20?

    We are not comparing assigned role, but available capability. Su-25 is capable of SEAD. IF needed, and no other aircraft is available, Su-25 can do it. And by definition of SEAD, it can not only survive, but also take out Tor/Tunguska or similar systems from distance.

    For example both Su-25 and A-10 are capable of carrying A/G munitions on outermost pylons. Should I ignore this capability as well, simply because it isnt used in real life?

    Yes, I agree. Any strike aircraft can carry out a so-called SEAD or DEAD mission using whatever munitions they have at their disposal. In operation Desert Storm in 1991 the air war was begun with SEAD missions against the Iraqi radar network – performed not by the USAF, USN or RAF – but by the US army with their AH-64s.

    A-10 would have been a better plane if it had just the Su-25’s Gast gun, or European-style twin 30mm revolver guns.

    The USAF are pretty happy with the gun – it’s what they specified 45 years ago – although sure, they probably wouldn’t specify it again. Since when was a gun in any application ever considered over-powerful?

    If you look at it this way any payload has nothing to do with survivability.. However the post was strictly about payloads, and some others “considered” PGMs are an advantage of A-10 in (terms of survivability), so that it would be further away from the SAM threat and not get shot down. I agree to that perspective; I believe munitions that can deal with the enemy better, quicker, or further away from the enemy is a KEY part of survivability.

    Well then we don’t disagree. But if a stand-off launch range is ‘KEY’ to an attacking aircraft’s survival it would make such slow and heavily armoured types like A-10 and Su-25 fairly irrelevant – no wonder the USAF have been trying to get rid of the A-10 for years.

    A-10/Su-25, are CAS aircraft, they are expected to operate right within range of enemy SHORADS.

    Wrong. These aircraft would not survive most modern air defence systems like you mentioned (Tor-M, Tunguska), not a chance.

    For a pre-planned attack againist a tank brigade that is protected by numerous Tor-Ms, Tunguskas etc, sole ability of carrying Kh-25MP, Kh-58U and Kh-31P (on newer variants), improves survival chance more than anything; armor, PGMs, maneuverability, DAS etc. In fact a pair of anti-radiation missiles can improve survival chance from close-to-zero to very-high.

    Why have you got this fixation on the idea of the Su-25 carrying out SEAD? I don’t think this is the assigned role of the Su-25 in RuAF service and they are unlikely to be equiped for the task. Su-24 and Su-34 are Russian SEAD attackers.

    However as the topic is survivability; I believe Su-25 has one clear advantage over A-10 in terms of payload: RWR equipped Su-25s can carry Kh-25MP but A-10 doesn’t have its own anti-radar missiles. On paper, a SPS-141 and Kh-25MP equipped Su-25 can fight againist KUB SAMs that shot them down. A-10 has no real means to do so without getting support from other aircraft.

    That’s a strange way of looking at the survivability of an aircraft – I don’t think Tu-160s or B-2s carry anti-radar missiles either, nor do most Su-27s or MiG-31.

    IMO the A-10 is far superior do to design, the armor tub for the pilot, redundant systems and control surfaces. Also the way the wing protects the inlet of the engines.

    I think you will find that the Su-25 has all of those as well – well except, perhaps, the the “magic all-protecting wing” bit.

    Thanks Deino.

    I know it is comprehensively different (glass cockpit, composites, new engines… etc) but it really is amazing testimony to the soundness of Tupolevs basic design, which also first flew in the same month as the first B-52 prototype, all the way back in 1952.

    This must be some type of record for a military aircraft, surely.

    High airflow engines close to the ground would be an issue unless the parking ramps, taxiways and runways are immaculate.

    That wouldn’t be the case for the high-wing B-52. I thought there was a plan 10 years ago or so to reengine the B-52 with RR RB211 – but I don’t think they make that engine anymore.

    When you look at it like that, what with the international diplomatic situation as it is I would have to agree with you. Diplomatic relations aside, surely the Russians would permit themselves to buy foreign when it makes sense financially and industrially – just as the Americans, Indians, Chinese and all the European countries do?

    Pass the pipe, you got some good stuff in there.

    Why not? They bought Mistral ships from the French, and a lot of other equipment too. Why go through the whole trouble and expense of developing a new type when they produce an off-the-shelf type from abroad for the price of a licence fee?

    What? There are only 9 confirmed AIM-120 kills so far its introduction. Both R-73 and AIM-9 missiles have more kills than that.
    Of that 9 AIM-120 kills, 5 have disclosed (IDK about reliability but) firing range;
    In 1992, F-16 againist a MiG-25, at 6 km
    In 1994, F-16 againist a J-21, at 12 km
    In 1999, F-15 againist MiG-29, at 10 km (Capt Jeff Hwang)
    In 1999, F-15 againist MiG-29, at 25 km (Lt.Col Rodriguez)
    In 1999, F-15 againist MiG-29, at 10 km (Capt Mike Shower)

    You may argue whether 25km is WVR or BVR (IMHO its both), but rest are all clearly WVR ranges despite shot by a BVR missile. One MiG-29 were also shot down by an AIM-7M due to AIM-9 being unable to lock, (another MiG hit the ground same day while turning with F-15s)

    Other than computer games, great majority of all kills in A-A combat (even the most recent one, the 2014 MiG-23 shooting down by one of our F-16’s) have been made in very close ranges. No dreams about actually shooting down something from 100 km away.

    I would certainly call 10 km BVR, and even the 6 km as well.
    How many of your alleged R-73 and AIM-9 kills even reached 6 kms in range?
