Why would the IAF be shipping the mission computer to Russia for servicing, isn’t it actually sourced from India itself, a home-grown product? The same goes for the cockpit displays – aren’t they French or Israeli sourced?
Su-33 can take off with full fuel and weapons load even from short stations of Kuznetsov. So in any performance comparsion about payload weight, range AND maneuverability, even 1995’s Su-33 is way better MiG-29K. However, Su-33 has 6500 kg payload capacity compared to Su-27S’s 8000 kg despite having additional stations. this is due to ski-jump. Perhaps Catapult will help in this area. In any case, configuring J-15 for catapults is a logical move, as future Chinese carrier will be CATOBAR. Otherwise J-15 would be confined to Liaoning, pretty waste of all the effort.
Have you got a source for the Su-33’s ability to carry 6,500 kg as well as full internal fuel load? When did the Su-33 last take off from the Kuznetsov with such heavy warload.
I would hate to sound like JSR, but this statement is a clear nonsense. Compared to which western carrier development? Kuznetsov is second only to Nimitz class currently in service. You may also argue Charles de Gaulle has some advantages because it fields AWACS (E-2) and thats it. Such comparison is also nonsense, as capability is directly proportional with carrier size, but competency is not. Though not seen any action, Kuznetsov carrier is as much competent as any.
This is a nonsensical comparison between both ships. Do you have even a basic idea of the specifications of the Charles de Gaulle: CATOBAR, nuclear power, complement, or the capabilities and specification of the Rafale M it carries?
Conclusions would be similar acceleration at sea level to 8km altitude, with max speed 1.74 Mach of the earlier Flagon and 2.15 for the later type, unless O2 injection is being used in which case the earlier one will squeak past 2.0 Mach; for actual service results…I believe would be most likely.
But these figures still compare well with contemporaries. You didn’t really think a Phantom could get much past 1.6 Mach and still make it home on fuel did you? A detailed description of the speed test used to establish the Phantom’s claimed top speed does wonders to place high Mach claims in this period into perspective.
Which aircraft was faster in a straight line at any altitude: Su-15M or F-4 – who knows? I would have thought that the F-4 had the greater range/combat radius?
Tiger was designed as a (sophisticated) tank hunter, and has since looked for a reason to exist (apart from straffing lost talibans).
I thought the Tigre was just as much an observation and reconnaissance aircraft, in the mold of the OH-58, as it was a tank buster? Some versions of the Tigre were never fitted with the cannon if i recall.
Everyone has named the obvious candidates…but to stretch the question…the oldest designed for the military type still in production…my guess is the C-130.
How about the Cessna 172 and derivatives such as T-41? In production since 1955 – although I don’t how long it has been in military service for? Didn’t the Iraqi AF buy some in recent years for training?
Yes that’s what I meant. Tactics & training are the most important factors in AtoA combat. People make a fixation of the F15 kill/loss ratio, but pretty much the same could be said of most Israeli planes when used mostly in AtoA.

Can a fighter radar detect an artillery round or a rocket? If yes it might be possible to determine the trajectory and calculate the launch point. The sensors would search in the area to find the target.
What kind of radar could do that?
A radar with a fast processor speed, a modern AESA type radar? I don’t doubt that the technology (if not the radar) already exists. A more pertinent question is: could the same fighter then fire a missile to shoot down the oncoming missile – and in the process protecting itself from enemy ground fire? Can AIM-120D or Meteor shoot down AD missiles?

Let’s face it, F-15 was built around qualitative advantages. It was going to batter opposing designs built around quantitative advantages. If the Soviets had moved toward a qualitative model we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
The Soviets moved to the Su-27 – surely a ‘qualitative model’? Do you thing a Su-27 is a cheap plane to purchase and to run?

While the OP is wrong on all of the counts already pointed out, it still is worth putting the significance of the F-15’s combat record in perspective. All too frequently it gets trotted out to bolster claims it cannot logically support – for starters it is an extremely poor benchmark for comparing performance relative to other aircraft. As some posters have alluded to, many factors unrelated the qualities of the aircraft itself played into it – the Eagle’s combat record owes much to meticulous maintenance, lavish information support, as well as the rigorous training and high professionalism of the people which operated it. Put other aircraft in its place with all these advantages available and they’d have produced similar results – as it is, a number of contenders never even got anywhere near the same opportunities (in purely numerical terms) to show what they were capable of, let alone in such favourable circumstances.
What you say above is true, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that a client state of the United States would certainly be at an advantage technologically, as regards military hardware, compared to a client state of the Soviet Union. You can’t compare the F-15, with its APG-63 radar, electronic warfare system, ALQ-xxx, AIM-9L, AIM-7F, Python-3, etc, with the avionics and weaponry of a MiG-23BN – or even a MiG-23MF. A MiG-23ML or MLD might get closer get closer.
Thing is, when you start to make a deeper analysis things don`t look that cool, allow to explain.
1. 86 jets ! Out of 109 identified 86 are classified as fighter (we don’t count heli`s or CAS or transport etc)
2. 73 jets ! from 86, 73 are older generations, lets not kid each other, for an Eagle driver shooting down MiG`s 21 & 23 it`s easier than clubbing baby seals. Period !
3. 13 Jets ! fall into the 4th generation category, more specific Fulcrum A & B…What`s your take on this ?
You may call the MiG-23 an earlier generation of jet compared to the F-15 – but the MiG barely entered frontline service around 3 years earlier than the American jet. Soviet fighter jets similar in technology and generation to the F-15 – MiG-29, Su-27 were not seen outside the USSR till around 1986 – a whole 10 years after the F-15. It’s hardly surprising that the Syrian AF only flew MiG-21 and MiG-23 against Israel in 1982 – that’s all the Soviets had in their military at that time as well.
it is notoriously known that latest F-16 blocks with higher thrust engines have even worser flight performances than early F-16 blocks, so why arguing with this? When is the aircraft underpowered, when having thrust/weight ratio 1,2 or 1,4?
Sure, the F-16 has gained a lot of weight in the last 30 years and wing loading has gone to hell, but the F-16E is still a performer – without the CFTs at least. I just raised the the issue of the F-16 for illustration – the USAF would never have considered derivatives of the engines which powered their 1970s F-15s and F-16s for their latest 5th generation jets, the power and the tech just isn’t there – and I can’t see how the Russian AF can do the same?
