How effective is the OLS-27 system on the Su-27 anyway? At what range could it detect an F-16 head on?

But the F-15 was in service 10 years before the Flanker, so obviously the USAF (and other countries) had the technological advantage for a while – it’s technological leap-frogging.

This has to have come from a Pakistani fan…or just a piece meant for certain Indian forums by a Chinese guy who got beaten up by the mods & member in Indian forum. As far as I seen, Chinese hardly care about Indian military as much as Indian care about Pakistani military. Its always the smaller guy bothering about the bigger & stronger ones which we see in online forums.
In Pakistani forums – its paranoid, jealously, bad mouthing & competing with India.

That MiG-29 should in fact be a Japanese F-2, should it not?

    Thread title ” Su-27 vs F-15″.

Now tell me what scenario they would have met in.

certainly not over Central Europe during the cold war 1980s – the Flanker arrived in the WP too late for that. The Su-27 was essentially a PVO aircraft in its first few years of Soviet service. Su-27 versus B-52 more like it.

Between Su-27 and F-15 the settling factor would have been ICBMs.
Guess this whole thread is moot.

What have ICBMs got to do with it – they were irrelevant when F-15s were shooting down MiG-29s in 1999 – or even when MiG-21s were shooting down F-105s in 1968?

    How is that relevant?

I guess we shouldn’t compare F-35 to anything either.

Air forces can only fight air wars with the aircraft they have, and not with aircraft they are going to have, or would like to have.

    What gizmos does Su-35 lack?

How many Su-35s are in service now?

    Levsha :

Because there are always differences in between aircraft A and aircraft B and because we like it 🙂

I’m not saying we shouldn’t do it, I sometimes enjoy it as well…:)

Myself , I beleive that the Flanker is somehow a better flyier than the Eagle but it is somehow lacking the “gizmos” to make it a real winner . It is nevertheless a deadly adversary not to be taken lightly .

I agree with you on all those 3 points as well.

Bear in mind that the latest variant of the F-15 is called the F-22.

Err, yeah, that was my point…

Put all upgrades, training, numbers or maintanence issues aside. Do you think an airforce using equally numerous equally maintained F-104s and F-5s could have won againist baseline Su-27s, MiG-31s and MiG-29s, with AWACS and ELINT support on their backs?

I don’t think he would think so, nor would I or most other people on this forum. Why would anyone believe ancient F-104s or F-5s are so much better than modern generation aircraft?

Comparing 2 platforms and saying which fighter can shoot down the other is pointless in the grand scheme of things. A better question is how well each jet tailor’s to each nation’s “system” or doctrine. Jet A maybe be faster, lighter, higher flying, cheaper, have better avionics and radar suites, and cheaper than Jet B. But if Jet B’s force has a better force structure and is better at filling its respective role, then the ratio will always be in favor of jet B. It’s very rare to have 2 jets face off head to head.

All that is true, so I wonder why we spend so much time comparing aircraft A with aircraft B on this forum when there are so many other factors to take into account?

If you talk about the Su-27SM upgrade, then yes i agree.
The SM upgrade is inferior to the Latest F-15 Golden Eagles upgrade with the v3 AESA and overall SA.

It does not mean this can be improved. And with the Su-30SM, Su-27SM3, Su-35S and Su-34, i would say the gap on these issues have closed.

In which case, let’s not compare fighter planes, let’s talk about who has the most money. After all, isn’t that how the allies defeated the axis powers in 1945.

The cutting up of these birds was criminal. 🙁

The basic airframes were massacred, but were the aircraft not cannibalised beforehand? Were they allowed to salvage as much spare parts as possible – surely all those extra NK-32s wouldn’t go amiss for those Tu-160s still flying?

Restart a production line with 20 year old technology? Ugh!

If USAF would allow a technology refresh, without the typical bureaucratic baggage that increases cost and schedule, I would agree.

They still produce F-15s and F-16s in America – how old are they?

Didn’t somebody successfully attack an Iraqi patrol boat with an AIM-7 Sparrow in 1991?
Plenty of those on a F-15C.;)

(Well, in the past, pre AIM-120)

Attitude. A bad one at that! 🙂

If you were one of my buddies and we’d a few pints in us, we’d now be embroiled in:
    “your attitude stinks”
    “NO, YOUR attitude stinks”
    “man u are sh!t”
    “who are ross county”
    “yer a customer”
    “the spl is sh!t”
    etc etc etc

    :D:D

Yeah, well, I hate it when arguments on forum threads just seem to go back and forth.
I like the idea of a few pints though…:D;)
