Single-seater M4 version has the inlet cone fixed, max.speed 1.7M. The older UM3K double seater has it variable, max.speed Mach 2,1.
Cant agree with statement that Fitters are ugly, quite the opposite, cool looking aircafts compared to A-7, Jaguar for instance.
Why is there such a technical difference between the single and 2 seaters (you’d think it would be the other way around at least)?:confused:

I guess you’re both right, the difference is about 5 years, the Su-17M entering service sometime about 1972. It’s interesting to compare the avionics fit of all 3 types and how it evolved over time, especially with the Su.

Turkey have the F-5-2000 programme (LAHAV) and T-38M Ari
Singapore has F-5S/T
Chile has the F-5E/F Plus
Taiwan has F-5MLU Tiger IV
Morocco has Tiger III upgrade
Spain has the CASA SF-5B(M) upgrade
US NAVY has their F-5N aggressors upgraded with LN260 CDU
Canada and Botswana have the CF-116D with HUD-WAC 4150And there are some more less successful programmes like F-5 upgrade by Caledonian Airborne Systems.
And how many of these upgraded F-5s will be able to carry AMRAAM type missiles (like the MiG-21 Bison)?

Question on the Su-17/22.
Is the main engine inlet in the nose fully variable (like the MiG-21’s)?
If so, why? After all, it’s usually not required for a ground attack type, the A-7 and Jaguar don’t have it, and even the fast Su-24 has simple holes for inlets?
Erm, how does the number of prototypes on the flight line directly correlate with program progression?
For instance, the JSF program has any number of prototypes… yet this doesn’t stop it from slipping on a seemingly continuous basis.
There may not be a complete direct correlation between the number of prototypes flying and the the progression of the test programme – the number of actual flight hours completed would have a more direct bearing of course.
We know enough about the F-35 programme, but the question remains, how far behind are the J-20 and PAKFA behind in their testing?

When the A-10 arrived at the USAF Corsair sqn´s the reception was not entirely of universal joy.
Jaguar certainly does not have the range/payload of the A-7, but I’m sure it compares very well with the Su-17 in this respect. BTW, the A-7 and Jaguar were usually equipped with IFR – how many Su-17s had that?
The main criticism I heard against made against the Sukhoi and Jaguar by the Soviet and Indian AFs was the complete lack of power when operating both types from-high altitude mountain airfields. The main criticism the US military had against the A-7 was its low speed.
Where did you get this idea that the Jaguar is “fragile” (see picture below), and what on earth is “battlefield persistence”? In fact the Jaguar is the only twin engined aircraft of the trio, so may have an advantage in certain situations.

Speed is a factor, but again I’m going to ask, how much speed, is enough speed? Ground attack aircraft have been designed with Mach 2 speeds etc for a long time, but has any combat mission, in history, been carried out at such speeds, during any part of the flight? For imparting energy on a munition, the F-35 can do that better than anyone out there, bar the F-22, and before the advent of such weapons as SDB etc, that concept only existed on paper. So what are you arguing? What is better?
What is the normal ingress cruise speed and altitude into the target zone of the F-35? I suspect it’s about M0.9-0.92?
How does it compare with the similar performance parameters for the Typhoon/Super Hornet/Rafale – which, of course, are carrying an all external bomb load and external tanks?
