    There has been a lot of progress in long range SAR ops in the Uk due to the need to provide suitable rotary aircraft for offshore oil gas support. The new fleet is equipped with kit that the Sea King did not have and the crews are using some ex mil people to learn from. I see this as a step forward not back and keep in mind that this is a primary task where the crew are not posted away to another non rotary unit.

    I am reminded of the stress in the photos of crews,makes me ponder the incredible resolve to keep going.They were sleep deprived often, took drugs which today would be banned for aircrew and still put in the effort. In Awe of them all.

    the Tiger Moth photos are justification for my very young ham fisted attempts to build the tiny Airfix model and leave it in the yellow plastic scheme and not even attempt the decals, I recall that the end result was awful regarding the twisted wings but at the time seemed OK!

    David, I was not meaning the number of air museums and perhaps by mentioning the recent published guide I have not helped my case. I believe that there are more aircraft preserved in public and private hands now than 40 years ago in the Uk. We highlight losses in great detail but restorations and imports outweigh them. Loosing key historic aircraft is also less likely with the networking now possible.

    The situation at Newquay has highlighted again the fact that as a volunteer you have no say in the outcome of an enterprise.When a change of direction occurs you can be cast aside with a thank you or in some cases not even that.Payroll employees have some rights which vary according to contract. Give up your time and effort with an awareness that it can all end and you have to move on with memories of the experience and thats your reward.

    Plainmad..I suggest you see the museums guide in the latest issue of Aeroplane magazine. Quite the opposite is in fact happening with aircraft preservation,it is steadily growing.

    Meddle, sadly there have been plenty of times when Shackletons have been available for museums in Scotland and each time no one has taken them from MOD disposals. A gate gaurd at Lossiemouth was scrapped, a potential gate gaurd at the former RAF Kinloss was burned then scrapped, a T4 at Strathallen was scrapped.

    Pleased to hear your input Baz, the local enthusiasts have a good starting point when compared to many air museums in the Uk which began with far less.

    the art depends on what it is aimed at…target market and also how much is being paid to the artist, an artist will not put a lot of time into an illustarion if the payment is small, you can see the effect in some of the pics Meddle posted. As long as the image evokes a feeling then I am happy.I especially like the new trend of CGI art.

    Good points wings43…its easy to overlook who the intended audince is and that explains why the CGI is more like a game effect. The TV drama mini series was rather good with more of the politics and predjudice on show.

    Lincoln II B-016 – a gate guardian at the Villa Reynolds airbase, San Luis Province .

    It is a huge achievement and stands on display in the night shoot with the other gem at YAM, the Mosquito of Tony Agar. Both represent a triumph of persistence and are fine tributes to the persons involved with those types during combat operations.
    Many many years ago the original Control Column mag included a cartoon view of a Whitley depicted as a jigsaw puzzle re assembly and suggested that it would be the ideal Xmas present for Newark air museum. At that time none of the stalwarts would have predicted what has been re constructed !
