Many towers in the Uk keep the aldis lamps handy, they are used in case of aircraft radio failure and I have reason to be glad of them when we returned to Inverness with no RT and got clearance to land via a green aldis signal.
Sometimes a airside vehicle looses radio contact and the aldis signals can get them across active areas safely instead of sending out another vehicle.

The very pistols require firearms licence if civil, careful cartridge storage and training. Aside from runway caravans on training airfields they are kept ready for use in all RAF towers and are fired from the balcony. With the addition of an insert they are also used to launch bird scaring shellcrackers and that also needs careful use.

I never cease to be amazed at the restored aircraft appearing and the high standards applied, terrific.

And as for photos this is an area I have learned a lot about since becoming a full time pro photographer. When permissions are given to be on private property for a photo session you have to abide by any conditions set by the owner of the property and also the subject in the picture. In a public area such as a road and not bound by any terms you can shoot what you like(almost ).

Be very careful with the cheaper quotes on Go Compare. I used google to check feedback on the 2 lowest companies and in both cases they operated in the style of Ryan Air..that is basic low price quoted then charge for extras. One was charging £30 to supply a certificate of insurance !

My tip..check out the mutuals, not on comparision websites and no shareholders to pay. I got a good deal from National farmers Union and I dont have a farm ! They easily beat Saga. Same for home insurance, I used Ecclesiastical and dont have a church or manse.

Aside from the as yet unkown reason for the undercarriage fault, I was impressed with the alert air traffic control at North Weald detailed in the report. They gave several warnings to check gear down.

Certainly there are reasons to operate low for crop spraying and the risks are well known. But where is the justification for a very very low pass over the photographer ? Did the pilot even know where he was ? Had any markers been placed ? I still believe this particular pass was reckless.

Thanks for the link update Dave, the Mosquito must rate as a very complex restoration to fly and I admire the dedication of the build team.

Mention of the Hanna family and how they flew is not the same as what this C47 clip showed. They were good at planning to reduce risk and I cannot recall a low pass which was directly above a cameraman at this height . Footage can be taken and also look dramatic without putting the crew at extreme risk. But then I am risk averse, I also find the lake surface skimming by landplanes very uncomfortable viewing.
