Yes I more than likely will be as I’m there nearly every day Les. I’m one of the more active members. You have seen me before with Malc. The Sea Vixen’s my project.

    Ok, here’s whats happening!
At the moment 685 is in need of a lot of attention. As the aircraft is outside, I have been limited to the amount of work that has been done on her over the past few months. The main and nose wheel undercarriages have been completely stripped down an totally referbished. They do now look brand new! Over the winter, most of the ancillary parts, air intake covers, exhaust cover etc, have also been stripped and referbished. The condition of the main airframe is excellant due to the Navy paint scheme protecting it, however, this paint is now in dia need of recovering and as soon as the better weather arrives, that will be looked at. The plan is to eventually ignite the electrical systems (although ignite is what I don’t want then to do!) and to see if we can bring to life the cockpit area as is with the Canberra. Most of, if not all, the flying serfaces are hydraulically operated and although it is our intention to get the wings to be able to fold and spread as we know they can, it is later intended to look at the possibility of getting most, if not all, the controls working. This is a long term restoration program and it is a priority to first get 685 looking good. The rest will be dealt with as and when possible.
I will post some more info on her along with accompanying photographs within the next few days…..watch this space!!

If enough interest is generated about the Vixen then I will gladly do an ongoing update on her. For some reason, there doesn’t seem to be a big following of this type of aircraft, unlike others, or maybe it’s just me!

At the end of the day guy’s, Malc’s work on the Canberra is 100%. As a member of the MAM also, (Sea Vixen XN685) I’ve done alot of work with Malc on WF922 and his commitment is unreal. As LesB said one picture shown to him one day resulted in the dayglo being put on the tail the next! How quicks that!

    Hi Micheal
When I fly my flight sim I tend to crash alot also on approach but flying ILS doesn’t neccessarly mean you will automatically land on the runway. For a start off, on my approaches I reduce speed down to around 140knots but only drop the flaps 1/3 rd distance down. As I get closer, I continue to decrease the speed to about 120kots with 2/3 flap and then only when I’m practically on the parameter of the airfield will I go to around 90knots then decrease the flaps fully. Even doing it this way, their is still an element of control required to steady the aircraft on approach. Dropping the flaps fully at 160knots will create a tremendous amount of lift resulting eventually in a stall. Slowly, gradually and gently works for me.

Hi Eddie, they are now trading under a different name, http://www.planestv.com ,where you can get all their videos, not sure why they changed though.I think another company did some compilations for the later years,DD video among others.
    Alan.

Quite right Alan. The main reason you cant find them on video now Eddie is because after they made the 2000 video, after that they changed the format to DVD only. So, they are available, just not in VHS form anymore.

By the way Alan, I like the piccy of the Twin Pioneer you have. Very familiar with it as it is based at Cov airport next to our Museum.

The Mirage 2000 is in my opinion far more manouvreble than the F16, but what ever the situation be at the end of the day it’s the weapons they carry and the pilot who flies it that makes the differance. with those combinations, they are just as lethal as one another!

Unfortunatly nearly all the major components were removed, including the engine. What needs to be taken into consideration is that this type of aircraft is still in production and all servicable parts can still be used. We do have a Pegasus engine but it will not be put in the airframe but put on display beside her at some stage.
I’m sure if the right amount of money was available, there is no reason why it could not be put back in the air, especially in the condition she is, but it’s not our intention to do so. It has been bought by us because it serves a significance with our collection.

Correct. No Vixen did see combat, but I’m sure that if it ever did go against anything in anger, I’m sure the opposition would of had their hands full……..for a short time anyway!

Hi Arthur. I can give you the history of the aircraft in detail but need a day or so to collect all the info on her. Just a quick taster though she served on HMS Eagle for a while she also done a tour at RNAS Yeovil. Her last use in service was at Christchurch, where she was used as an instructional airframe before finally being retired which was when we aquired her around 1990.

As for keeping her active, we do have a plan to return all her systems back to life such as hydraulics and electrical but this will take time. The wings do fold and spread under power using a GSrig but a lot of work is required to work the other components such as flaps, airbrakes, etc..

I’m currently putting a web site together for the Sea Vixen and also our latest aquisition Sea Harrier ZE694 that we got this week. I will be keeping the forum up to date with the progress of these sites and any info required should be found there, however, I will be in touch with all the info you asked for.

any information i would like to know i just have heard about the aircraft but never read about it in detail

The Sea Vixen was a navy all weather fighter, which derived from the DH110 aircraft prototype. Designed by Dehavilland Aviation, the DH110 made it’s first flights in the 1950’s. It was marred though by an unfortunate accident at Farnborough when the aircraft broke apart after pulling out of a dive sending debrie into the crowd which included one of it’s engines. A number of people were killed and fortunatly to this day not one single spectator at a UK airshow has been killed since.
Although this incident occured bids by the armed forces for the aircraft still continued and although the airforce optied for the then new Javalin the Navy stuck to their original plan of using the Sea Vixen.
The aircraft is a twin boom aircraft notorious by DeHavilland, i.e. the Vampire and Venom, and was an excellant all round fighter.
XN685 has been with the museum now for over ten years but the airframe remains in excellant condition making it easy for me to maintain. The wings do fold on our aircraft however a problem with a hydraulic leak is preventing us from doing this at the moment.
Anything specific you require to know, don’t hesitate to ask.
