I’m not sure where you get this idea from robmac.
Fairford has just had a shelter for B-2s installed, and is now a designated B-2 Forward Operating Base. Yet they still manage to hold a small airshow each summer.
I know the bit about Fairfords B2 shelter, but I’m only saying what I’ve heard. With the recent goings on with the runway at the hall, I think people have been putting two and two together. I suppose it would be better if we heard it from say, the base commander! At least we know for definate and not just have people guess!
Thanks Les, definatly worth it! Lets just hope I can reach the standards of the Canberra, then I will be happy!
Well done Albert. Nice piccy. How well does Miss Demeanor stickout in that. Third row back in the middle………..that reminds me..
How can we forget her!! Kemble 2003, very hot day!
Oh, she’s looking MUCH better! Excellent job! What squadron markings are you going to put her in, 890’s again? 😉
As of yet, I’m not to sure what we’re doing, but I believe the plan is for that squadron. She does lack in markings at the moment but they will increase as the year goes on. Regular updates will be posted as and when more is done.
No, they should be on a dump—- :dev2: Piston and props for ever 😀
Terrible thought 😡 Piston engines and props do sound good, but noise and heat are far better 😎
Definatly better than being on a fire dump. Looking at the pictures though, how nice would it be to see a Phantom and a Sea Vixen in formation! Bliss!! 🙂
At the end of the day, the B.P. P.111 is at a museum and not been scrapped like most aircraft are. Regardless of where or how it’s kept, it is in good hands and the future of the aircraft is looking bright, all be it some distance away. The aircraft will eventually be put inside and until then, we will, and are, keeping close tabs on the condition of the airframe………it will not get in any worse a state than it already is!!
Hello Robmac,
You mentioned a future restoration work on the P111a: do you know if this involves “only” the structure and paint job or the aircraft is missing some important parts? For example is the cockpit still complete? I’ve never seen a walkaround of this exhibit and just liked to know what are the general condition aside from a rather ‘sad’ look.
Best Regards

It does mainly involve airframe and paintwork but no, it does not mean recovery of parts for it. The aircraft is complete and hopefully when the move and restoration does occur it will be well documented and pictures will hopefully become available. We have other projects that need to be finished before anything on the P.111 is done, but the forum will be informed as soon as the work starts on the airframe.
It’s been mentioned before, but it is a crying shame to see the Boulton Paul P.111 condemned to fester outside, when it should by rights be tucked away at Cosford with the research aircraft collection.
Unfortunatly when the Bolton Paul was aquired by us, it was impossible to put her inside. When the Museums main hanger was built provisions were not made to manouvre aircraft in and out of the main doors, they had been designed to small. The museum was then run by a differant group that run it now and to be quite honest we would love to shuffle the aircraft around to put inside the more rare exibits like the Bolton Paul and the Armstrong Whitworth designed aircraft, as this is what we tend to base the museum around along with the Whittle collection! We are currently looking at plans to put the P111 inside and completely restore her again but these things take time. As for the P111 going to Cosford, FORGET IT!! This is a rare subject and because of that, it doesn’t mean it has to go to a big museum. We could say the same about the E28/39. As we are the official Sir Frank Whittle Collction site we should have that airframe, but thats another story!!
Nice pictures LesB, and you finally got to meet me too! How exciting for you! I see you managed a few photo’s including the Vixen also. I particularly like the close sice by side cockpit shot of her. Very good!
I’m glad to see the picture of the NF14 you used WillJ was after I painted it and not what it was like before, as it was a mess! This is actually it’s fourth repaint since we’ve had it. Unfortunatly the previous times it was done, the airframe wasn’t prepared properly and it resulted in it ending up like it got some sort of desease the way the paint was peeling off, but thankfully it has been done properly now so it should last a lot longer.
Superb – are MAM having a major repainting push at present cos it seems just about everything is being worked on -absolutely fantastic, whatever they put in your water – I’ll have some of it!
Not everything we have is being repainted, just a couple of projects are currently undergoing major look overs because they need them! Although it is nice to see these airframes looking new after repaints not all of them need them. There are certain subjects we have that just need cleaning. Man power is our biggest problem and there are only a few of us that are hands on regarding the airframes so only one or two jets are worked on thoroughly each year. The Vulcan, all be it looking good at the moment, still needs to be finished painting. The Sea Vixen, that I work on, is currently under going major restoration and plans are also in the pipeline to repaint the Argosy G-APRL, this will however take a couple of years. So yes, things are going on at MAM at the moment including the arrival of a new airframe in the next few weeks’ of which airframe I’m afraid I am unable to inform you about at this time, but watch this space!
Does anyone know of any video clips online of her runnning her engines. I came across one recently but the engine run was filmed from inside and only showed a fleeting glimpse of the propellors.
I do know that one of the British airshow DVD’s, either 2002 or 2003 has a fairly long bit on Cov’s Classic Airshow and in the filming of this they include a good bit on the Shackleton which shows it running.
I take it she is still based at Coventry. Last we heard at the Museum, all the classic jets, including WK163 were goint to Kemble. If she is still based there, is it long term or will she be moved. With the recent intro of TUI to Cov, it is said that Thompson do not like the classic aircraft flying out of Cov and they want them out!
MAM Meteor
WillJ It’s an NF14 At the museum mate and it was me that you were talking to.
