Thanks Galdri, that all makes sense. Shame if Iceland Express pull the route though.

I have been to Iceland four times now and it is the country I would live in if I had the choice :-))

Icelandair isn’t too bad actually but last time I flew over we came back on one of the 757-300’s and I found it *very* uncomfortable indeed. Have also flown on one of the Fokker 50’s from Akureyri to Reykjavik City which was fun. The most amazing airfield that I saw had to be Isafjordur where the runway is at the end of a fjord and the planes have to fly in close to the sides, would not want to do that in marginal weather.

Might get over for a few days at Christmas.

More and more interesting! I knew that the SAS had a pair of Agusta 109s but not where they had obtained them. I live in Guildford very close to the old 8 MAP Depot RE in Stoughton and we used to have helos land there occasionally. Was surprised to see a light blue A109 come in fast one day with no obvious markings and kitted out with long “foot boards” each side under the cabin doors….t’was one of them. Was ready to catch him going back out with my 300mm telephoto but he went out a different route – very professional!

Thanks Flood, as soon as I knew where to look I found her in W&R 18, was not in the index. Funny how I look at some of my old photos and find out these plane’s life story since 🙂

“The Luftwaffre night fighter was a Lockheed 14 “

Aha! Not like this one by any chance? Snapped her at Chino in 1993 though this was 13 years after the film was released so perhaps unlikely unless she had been in store afterwards.

I went digital earlier this year but with a 2 megapixel Canon Powershot A-40, not a digital SLR which is *next* year’s purchase. I still use a 35mm SLR but only for wide-angle or moving shots which the digi can’t cope with. Has reduced my film processing by at least two thirds which realistically at £8 per film for both purchase and processing onto CD has saved some considerable money.

I do like your comment “I will typically take more than I would before – because I can, not because I need to” because I think digital allows you to experiment far more than film does. All the cost are up front – camera, 2 x 128 MB cards, batteries and charger – so anything I do from here is really paid for already; different angles, walk rounds, into light shots; all can be happily done and the results are immediately obvious.

On balance I think digital *is* cheaper in the long run however what I do love is the sheer flexibility that it gives me.

PS: Good point about backing up digital scans straight onto CD or DVD immediately.

Just back from N.Yorkshire via Beverley, dhfan’s photo link does show her as she is today (well, last Monday anyway). I managed to take several reasonable but crooked photos by resting my digital camera on the fence and between the barbed wire however varied angles are obviously impossible plus lots of clutter. I think she is worth a look if you have not seen a Beverley before. Easy to find, the local council have not removed the signs to the museum yet 🙂

Dodgy photo attached to give an idea……

Hmm, non-refund of airport taxes does sound a bit sharp.

I don’t agree with comments about Michael O’Leary being a “shark”, just a very focused businessman (though there are similarities between the two perhaps?).

Have flown with Ryanair on five return flights now and each time they got me from A to B reliably and incredibly cheaply. Having checked their web site I knew what the onward transport options were to where I was going. Their customer service onto and on the plane is best described as robust but again they did the job required of them.

Thanks to the Ryanair’s, Easyjet’s, Buzz’s and Go’s of this world I can now visit places which 15 years ago I could not afford to do. Air Europe was good while it lasted but the “full service carriers” soon put paid to them.

Like any service provider Ryanair is only as good as my last experience with them, so far they have fully met my expectations.
