    Warwick Culbin forest crash site

I visited the Warwick crash site in 1985, I was 15 at the time and on a family holiday in Inverness. I’d read about the site being discovered in Flypast and being interested in such things rang the Forestry commission in Inverness who were able to give me a grid reference for the site. I was also into orienteering at the time so it didn’t seem that daunting a prospect, map in hand, finding the site. But in retrospect I think it was complete luck (and actually my brother) who stumbled across the site in our wee forest trip.
I’ve attached some photo’s taken at the time by my brother at the site. Oxygen bottles were still there, as were the porcupine exhausts and the remains of the engines, one half burried. I don’t remember seeing any pieces of geodetic, everything was pretty smashed up. I’ve still an exploded shell case from a .303 round I picked up at the site, the only thing I left with.
I really enjoyed the holidays we had in Scotland. Coming fron Northern Ireland it was great to see the aircraft at Kinloss and Lossiemouth…all I ever saw at home was helicopters!

    Point 3 from Jagan

I thought exactly the same myself.
But I’ve been looking on another forum with a Dunkirk thread from a few years ago, which covers events in some detail with period photos.
So photographs of two Dunkirk Spitfire wrecks exist with their U/c down.

    N3295 P/O Davies 222 Sqn
    N3103 P/O Gribble 54 Sqn

The piece suggests ” P/O G Davies (222 Sqn.) landed wheels down on May 31st 1940. After this landing he taxied to the dunes before setting his Spitfire on fire”.

Seems the Director did more research than I gave him credit for.

I wonder how the Ulster guys are getting on with their recovered ‘cat…. JV 482 ?

Currently distracted with a Phantom I believe.
But hopefully it won’t be another 32 years before the Wildcat is finished! 😮

    Superb photo. Thanks for posting.
So given its location and condition now, how complete would it have been even 30 years ago, when the Wildcat was recovered in a similar location?

I’ve seen a picture of an Army Air Corps Scout hovering over the Corsair and the windscreen frame was still on the wreck, which was probably in the 70’s. The engine and prop were still on it too. It’s been picked to pieces over the years though, as it’s fairly accessible although the mudflats are really very dangerous to walk on.

I’m still patiently waiting to see the Wildcat finished….Thirty two years later! 😮

Lough Erne most probably has some wrecks in it.
Catalina AH536 crashed there, but is a war grave. FP194, FP110,W8414 also crashed on the Lough.
Sunderlands DP181, W4036, DD857 W3995 also crashed with loss of crew. DD862 also sank there.

Rumours have circulated for years regards wrecks in Lough Erne, but no evidence has ever been produced to prove they exist. Aircraft were scrapped there, engines removed etc. And I’ve sen photographic evidence of that. If they’re at the bottomof the lough is another thing.

Space is tight in the museum, but then space an issue in every museum, and I guess more so if it’s in a city centre.
Still, a fantastic place and I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Berlin.

Maybe the Buccaneer got its nickname from the other brick like object?
And the Seafire seems to be a very clipped wing version :/ …it gets quite a distance too!

There is at least one recent image on Flickr. Earlier images from 2007 do indeed show them sitting on the rims.

Water conditions combined with original build and paint specification obviously play a part in the preservation process. The Heinkel 115 recovered in Norway a few years ago is amazing! The paint looks almost factory fresh!

Would it be fair to say conservation has evolved quite a bit since the 70’s.

The Ulster Folk & Transport Museum also have the nose section of Shorts 360 G-BKMW on display next to the SC.1
I think there’s also a 330 preserved in Thailand (Royal Thai Army)

I have some original wartime press photos which you can see where paint has been applied to give some areas more definition. Presumably it then looked better when it eventually went to print. It’s actually quite subtle, and I guess a lot of images would have had some form of treatment.
