There is a Franco-Italian programme to develop an ABM – but AFAIK it’s not well funded. See the Aster Block 2 previously referred to. There’s something about it in the Sea Viper/SAMPT thread, under Missiles & Munitions. If built, it should be able to intercept a ballistic missile at a range of 150 km & altitude of 60 km.
I think the main issue is that Europe is yet to be convinced of the need for ABM. Most defence thinkers in the EU believe its US paranoia, will Iran really lob a couple of MRBM at Europe? Really?? It does seem highly unlikely, not impossible but a very remote possibility. And then who else? Libya? more than remote. Syria? forget it. Russia? I should probably get a straight jacket for even considering it.
ABMs are very expensive and if you are going to spend that money there needs to be a real threat and one that cannot be removed by an exisiting method, which with Iran is not the case- if they really threatened the EU with MRBMs I really don’t think the major powers of the Europe would sit on their hands.
Actually i think its all rather sensible. For once they (government) have one eye on the export market so giving BAE 127mil to design a platform that suits more than just the RN seems to be money well spent.
That would explain the 76mm gun in the artwork, few nations will buy a ship with a Mk8 or UK155 strapped to the front.
pj do keep up, I made that comment yesterday in the navy news from around the world III thread!
Sorry, hadn’t looked in that thread for a while, missed it.
Whats the odd looking object to port behind the hanger, some sort of launcher????
I’m going to take a wild guess at some sort of crane but covered in RCS reducing kit? T26 is supposed to have some mission adaptable modules….? Still going with that stupid two size hanger I see as well.
Are you pointing finger at me:confused:
I think you misunderstod my intent.
What i meant was this, if those Tu-160 infact did cross over UK airpsace(which i don’t).
Then the UK airspace we are talking about are far to the North and quite a detour if it the Tu-160 came south from the North-Sea.
They may have taken an short-cut, and crossed over Lewis, and the F3 was not around at that time. But hey! Its very unlikely it happend.
The RuAF routinely patrol outside Norwegian airspace, but never cross it.
Its called ‘fencing’ our Airspace.Thanks
Apologies, so many ridiculous “best/rubbish” debates get going on here!
Looking for some pics, so far the only other I can find. Odd CIWIS placement? One in front of the bridge and one with limited arcs on starboard rear of hanger.
Interestingly there isn’t the faintest whiff of possible numbers. They kept away from that…
There are different definitions of UK airspace, as in the post by UKADGE. UK territorial airspace (i.e. over the UK & its territorial waters) & airspace managed by the UK. There’s nothing in the MoD statement to say that the former was violated. It seems pretty clear that it’s the latter that was meant.
I think there is a pinch of media ignorance mixed with some cage rattling by the MOD, I think some in the hierachy like to “tweek the Bears tail” now an again.
Also probably annoyed that plans to reduce UKADF further keeps getting scuppered by some well timed Russian flights. (or perhaps thats the RAFs little conspiracy and they have arranged with Russsia…..)
Well let’s call it “class” then. Do you think the Typhoon or Rafale are in the same class as either the F-22 or F-35? That is to say do you think going head-to-head one on one they’d win at least 50% average? Do you think either could attack any ground target, no matter how it’s defended, equally as well as the F-22 or F-35?
That would be an interesting exercise to reclassify aircraft in an entirely different manner based on capabilities or ‘class’ as you said. Would make much more sense, a more scientific classification approach perhaps, aircraft design does ‘evolve’ rather than just appear in isolation…hmmmm one to ponder on the train home, how to classify and arrange, what to name these ‘classes’? (yes it is a dull wet afternoon…:D )

Cheers, they had a great photographer in the back of one of those Tonkas, guys got talent.
One tries. I wonder if the MOD has a suggestion box?
Can you imagine how big that would be? 😀
?
Chap was trying to kick off a “russian bombers brill RAF rubbish” debate, bit childish i thought.
If those Bombers are violation UK airspace, why don’t the RAF do something about it?
My angel is this, those UK interceptors always arrive too late, the bombers have already left UK airspace..
Thanks
Awww, soo cute, thanks for the contribution but I think you wandered on to the wrong page lad, here you go
http://www.futureflyersclub.com/toy-airplanes.aspx
and make sure you tell your mummy you’re on the internet.
What poor, sloppy reporting.
Reading the sky piece it is almost certain, given the statements from the MoD and the OC of 111 that the russian aircraft did not in fact enter Brit airspace.
Yet the useless media outlet runs a headline re invasion and mentions several times through the piece that the russians were in Brit airspace. The best bit is this:“…the Russians eventually left British airspace.
The Ministry of Defence stressed that there was no indication that the planes intended to enter British airspace.”
What incompetent allowed those two sentances to be published adjacent to each other, let alone the fool who wrote them! It isn’t even a technical aviation issue it’s basic english comprehension!!!
I’m getting old…
Sky News and Yahoo, those power houses of reliable media! Noticed the story as I was looking at my e-mail, thought i’d put it up for derision. So did they fly “over” Lewis in the conventional sense of Lewis was below their cockpit windows OR did they fly “over” Lewis in the sense of a line on a map and they were to the North of it…If they flew over the Isle of lewis in the conventional hairyplane sense then UK airspace was more than breached!! Sky…shakes head.
I take it the second Hawk trainer was equipped for teaching/training how to use AMRAAM?
? The second pic is of an unarmed T1A…? eloborate?
