Thank you for posting the 9 ship photos….it makes up for the brief glimpse I got of them.!!
I saw the F3s as they were heading in from the coast towards Coningsby passing by my works location at Gunby, E. Lincs about 10am.
They where accompanied by another fast jet..no doubt catching some piccys..as it wheeled over and around the formation….
I would like to see some of those photos.!!.
All the best,
Clive.
On return the Typhoon had a couple of minutes play over Spilsby…giving our dinner plates a good rattling.!!..
Clive.
Perhaps it’s time to send one out over East Lincolnshire…even if it’s in the middle of the night…!!
A few years ago it was a real treat, every day for about a fortnight, one was returning from the East over my works at Gunby, E Lincs…about 8-45am..magic.
I can just about remember what they sound like.!!..but a little reminder would be good.!!
Was it last November when one was last out this way…??
Clive.
I believe T.09 was out and about again this morning at 8-45am.??..this time he did come around our back garden..brilliant…’cept I was at work at Gunby at the time..!!
Clive.
Thank you for posting the photos Neil,
I was out in the back garden creosoting the shed….and heard T.09 as soon as he was away down the runway….and of course even better during the display.
Often a run round the back of Spilsby here is made before rtb, but not today it seems…must have been a quick return to land.
Did the BBMF Dak’ do a flyby at EK on return C’by ??..it was noted passing Spilsby in that sort of direction…although I do appreciate that both sites are in the same direction !!!
Clive.
Hello,
We watched todays display from up on the grass slopes on the seaward side of the road up to Beachy Head..which was quite free (£3-90) and easy parking and viewing today, said to be the quiet day.???
Signage noted all in place for park and ride scheme.
No doubt it would be a closer view from within the crowds on the seafront..
But..I don’t do crowds…and in fact haven’t done an airshow for many years…
I enjoyed the display..the light was a bit hazy for viewing from up on the Downs at first, but then later in the afternoon it was very much clearer.
Thank you Susan for taking me a ride out….
Clive.
Hello,
The Lanc’ was at Eastbourne today…as was I, far from my Lincolnshire home….
It was holding briefly inland while the fighters displayed, with the BBMF display starting at 3pm.
Clive.
Hello,
I wonder if anyone has a progress update on the Flamant trip.??
Thanks,
Clive.
Hello,
I just checked on to the forum looking for info’ or to post a question of what I heard/saw at around 1-40pm today…
Viewed from Gunby, East Lincolnshire…it was heading North at about the level described…it would have been perhaps passing overhead the Spilsby area..as I was only seeing it way in the distance but even so I was sure I had seen a twin tail.
It is brilliant to just be in the right place at the right time and witness a rare overflight..
All the best,
Clive.
I summise this may be the pat ‘trician that I had a natter with a few weeks ago when he was testing things around the Duxford restoration hangar…we were both waiting for a torrential downpour to cease so we could get to the next hangar.
At the time he was particularly fascinated with the ex Skyfame Oxford and TSR 2.
Sounds like it’s a testing task that gets him to some interesting places.!!
Clive.
6,15pm…I summise that may have been the Catalina I have just heard heading South…again in the distance just to the West of Spilsby, E. Lincs…I have been stooging round the garden hoping for an overflight on the way home…can’t win ’em all.!!….pleased enough to have seen it on its way North..
And earlier a Mustang ?? was spotted in the distance out to the East of Spilsby heading South..5,24pm
Clive.
Thank you for the info’ Duxman…
All the best,
Clive.
Hello Auster Fan,
I’ll second the idea of a pleasure flying history article.
I did put up a posting previously about the old Skegness Aerodrome in the hope of tempting some old photos out of the woodwork…I valiantly kept the thread going for a few days back in 2003.
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=16121
I used to work in Skegness and during the Summer season the crisp sound of Auster could be heard flying to the Clocktower and back day in day out.
My first flight was in one of the Skegness Air Taxi Service Austers..sadly I did not record which one..!!
I then spent many happy hours down at the Aerodrome watching holiday makers take their first trip by Auster.
In the latter days of the Aerodrome I think with folk whizzing away on hol’s overseas…one Auster was sadly all that was needed for the pleasure flying.
I used to visit the Aerodrome often on a Saturday when it was change over day on the coast….a bit of cash was a useful commodity.. and I had several trips out in the 150s and 182…..but then got a taste for Auster..!! It smelt better..??!! vibrated your feet about a bit…but felt more real flying..??!!
A few flights up to sight see some fields we owned…including an approach and low fly through of our 440 yard grass fen field….
One with Ken Harness out of Manby Showground when Skeg-Air did a couple of days pleasure flying in association with a car show/rally.
A flight accross the fens with David (Skeg-Air 101) Coulson in AHCK including a low level return to keep under Fly In traffic that was climbing out of Skeggy.??!!
Then with (now sadly late) Peter Wilkes we took AHSO over to Wickenby and another day across to Sturgate.
I had some quiet plans up my sleeve to whisk an Auster away to other destinations but things went pear shaped down at Skeggy and that was that.!!
My flying escapades came to an end…although they continued for a while from Netherthorpe in G-AVUG and then Gamston with G-BOHJ and G-OTOW.
There must be loads of stories to tell of Skeggy Austers and I bet they feature highly in holiday snaps of holiday makers from the Midlands….
Often I have heard the cry..”Look..it’s got zip fasteners holding it together.”.!!
Perhaps an article in some Midlands newspapers would bring out some Skeggy stories and Auster photos.???
There was a brief report in Flypast on the sad demise of Skegness Butlins Aerodrome and also Dave Stennett who worked at the Aerodrome for several years had a small article in Lincolnshire Life Magazine.
I wonder if Dave is still about in Skegness..??
It certainly needs documenting….
You have sold one copy already..!!!
All the best,
Clive.
photo attached records the Bulldozer at the Aerodrome..
Hello,
Possibly the naff-est way to bump a thread…????!!
But I have just been watching Auster 5 G-ALFA make a couple of orbits of Spilsby, Lincs before puttering away to the West.
I enjoyed it anyway….again please..!!
All the best,
Clive.
Hello,
Now this rudder thing has jogged my memory…
At Binbrook crash gate one day I watched as the fire section took up their positions.
A Lightning landed and the fire engines followed it up the runway…I remember thinking it was all just an exercise….until the Lightning taxied past minus rudder.!!
Now I was only a little lad at the time…but I reckon that is what I saw..???
Perhaps now is the time to get a confirmation of what I did see…or not..??!!
Or shall I prepare to be shot down..rudderless..in flames..???!!!!
All the best,
Clive.
