I am looking for the “Manual of German Air Force Terminology, German-English”. It was published by the Air Ministry during WW II. I have Part 1, but I need the other sections or volumes. Would anyone have an idea where to look or where I could purchase this manual?
    Thanks.

Looks like wiesso has answered your question….if all else fails could run you a photocopy!

    Hi Mackerel,
Looking at an old Mk1 spitty AP, mention is made of the generater fuse control being mounted on a platform on the port side of the cockpit, below the map case.

But I stand to be corrected on this.

    Cheers, Chumpy.

PS Havent we met some place before?

I think G-ALDO would be unlikely, according to several sources.. Putnam H.P. a/c, British Civil Reg etc. ‘DO was in airline service during the early 50s before being scrapped at Blackbushe in 1959.

The Halton mentioned elswhere remains favourite to me.

…Seems to be a bit of confusion on what was actually used as the basis for the Reindeer..Ashton, Halton, Hermes???
Maybe a wade through the relevant type prodution lists would, produce a lead as to the airframe concerned, the A.I. article mentions it being at Blackbushe so another avenue of research I guess.

All of this reminds me that the film was based on the novel No Highway by Nevil Shute, read it many years ago, a great yarn!

…Scan of the page from the December 1970 A.I. mag, alas comes up very poor quality.

The photo credit is to Aviation Photo News, are they still around in some guise? So maybe still a neg or a decent photo on file perhaps??

Just a bit of a follow up here, after a spot of Googling got in contact with the Grand Daughter of the pilot!

Yes this is Sqd Ldr MacClaren at Kasumigaura naval air station, Japan, during the 1924 round the world attempt.

So many thanks to you guys for getting in contact, would not have made the conection without your spark!

Papa Lima, know what you mean about recognising faces etc!

Though to my eyes the chap standing in the cockpit on page 126 certainly resembles, the guy in my photo. Looks as if he may have a moustachce but the repro in Putnam book not that good, the other two though are clean shaven, so not them!

Thanks for all the input so far, especially Papa Lima!

Looking through the said Putnam volume I reckon the aircraft is maybe a Vulture rather than a Viking. Note single bay wings rather than the double of the Viking.

Thus possibly the round the world flight attempt by MacClaren etc of 1924, page 125/6 of the Vickers Putnam? Mac maybe the guy shaking hands with the officer??

Again thanks for the info. Chumpy.

Most strange for them to print such an item..surely there must be some bad news that could have filled the pages!!

Seriously though well done whoever was responsible.

The BOTTOM LINE I guess is the answer here, i.e. the willingness and depth of pocket of a private individual to fund a rebuild. In the case of Spits early marks always more desirable than the later marks.

Same goes for twins (ie Hornet, Mossie etc) keeping a pair of Merlins etc fed and water as opposed to a single, expensive stuff.

Anything can be done if you throw enough money at it, airframe wise. Biggest prob though is always going to be power-plants, as XN923 rightfully points out the chances of getting a Sabre running pretty slim. Thus you are kind of limited by those readily available Merlin, Griffon, Allison etc.

Sure you can shoe-horm some other sort of engine into say a FW190 but in aint ever going to be a proper BMW / JUMO, Thus not to be taken seriously by those with the dosh!

Can’t believe that there isn’t anybody on the forum who hasn’t got a nice picture of a Tugmaster to post.

    new spars

    Hi Jackattack,
Interesting to hear of the requirement for new spars, are the current ones ‘WW2 originals’, or ‘new’ when it got rebuilt at St Athan a few years back?
