Sabrejet, I got the Speke display date from my log and have just checked with a friend who was also there. He confirms that it was a Whit Monday which fell on the 21st that year. Don’t wish to nitpick but am just trying to keep the record straight!

Not nitpicking at all: hence my question mark. Make sense to do those ‘northern’ shows together too.

Sabrejet, I’ve sent you a private message.

    Duly returned.

Probably the best vintage jet formation team in the world? :eagerness: A friend scanned this from an old & well worn negative, so apologies for the poor quality, nevertheless, I think it captures the atmosphere of the times.
    Regards, Rich.

Close, but this one gets the cigar for me: all are jets too (well sort of!)

    For 1956:

21 May 1956 – Rolls Royce Hucknall 29th May? see below.

    29 May 1956? – Speke Airport, Liverpool: 100,000 spectators

29 May 1956 – Hucknall, Royal Air Force Association “Annual Air Display”

21 July 1956 – Coventry – Horizontal show, 600 ft. ceiling, overcast. Team just did a flyby in diamond formation

15 Sept. 1956 – RAF Biggin Hill – Horizontal show, 1,200 ft. ceiling, broken overcast

15 Sept. 1956 – RAF West Malling – Horizontal show, 4,000 ft. ceiling, broken overcast

I’m sure I also recall an F-86 display at Plymouth?

    Doug,

I can’t quickly find what I’m looking for, but you’d get a chunk of the 48th FBW story by contacting the History Officer at Lakenheath: years ago I went up and consulted the back issues of the Wing magazine (Jet48) which they hold. A very useful archive.

I’ll still keep looking in the meantime because I do have copies of some of those too.

Many thanks to all who replied. Agreed with the thinking needed sometimes to reveal what the Discovery search engine holds.

Spoke to AHB and they have confirmed they are not holding the ORB I seek.

So its back to Kew and a rethink on the question to ask methinks.

You never did mention the ORB you’re looking for….?

Loads of ORB’s, War Diaries etc are not available because they simply do not exist: they once did, but are now lost forever. Generally the farther back one goes the worse it becomes, but I know that a number of 1960’s-era books don’t survive either.

Folks didn’t think it mattered back then, sadly.

Well, here is my tribute to K5054 being prepped for flight. After 6 years of work I missed the date by a month, meant to fly it on the 6th of March. Will be April now…
The pitot mast and tube are genuine, so I guess it counts for this thread!

Now that is a thing of beauty: please don’t paint it!
