Is that Il96 a shortened version ? Looks like it’s had the 747sp treatment.

Back in the dim & distant past I saw one of the first at RIAT in 1977 at Greenham Common. Shortly after this they dumped one in the north Sea or Atlantic & there was a mad scramble to recover the “secret” missile (Phoenix perhaps ?). This is all a bit foggy. Can anyone fill in the details ?

I can recommend an excellent book called “Cutting Edge” which chronicles a carrier deployment throught the eyes of an F14 pilot who is also a photographer.

Being into photography I have always contemplated buying a petrol driven chain saw as invariable a sign post or similar will get in the way.

Well, it was like this officer……………..

Windows, yep we used that on our spacecraft (Geostationatry weather sate) control system. OK as long as you don’t “stress” it.

    Anyway Well done NASA.

Has anyone considered that Flood & Snapper may be one and the same. This is why we only ever see pictures of Snapper.

    It would explain a lot.

I would like to see a lot more axis aircraft restored. It pains me to think of all the potential projects rotting away or being scrapped in the pacific.

Here is an interesting link I found on the pacific wrecks forum about a P63 recovery in the Kurile islands.
