Whilst at the Avalon Airshow a RAAF mechanic told me that all of the F-111’s that were not going to the main museums were going to be shredded due to some agreement with the US. Has anyone else heard this? I would have thought it would be relatively easy to make them unusable (cut the wing hinges for example) and it is not like the F-14 where an unfriendly country could obtain spares from the airframes. I would certainly like an escape module if any were to be broken up.

A signed part of the ‘Southern Cross’????
“b) A photo of the actual plane” OK call me an amateur but that is not the Southern Cross. Don’t know enough to comment on the fabric though.

PS Maybe it is part of a well known Dornier…
Hi Gary
I just did a trawl of the net and there are a few mentions of it, my memory is bad as it happened nearly three years ago!

F-111
Without actually looking it up I believe one of his wheels fell off on take off so he only had two options, bang out or land on the belly. I think it was last year.
Signed as an “expat”. I notice that Vicki Pilkington has signed it but no Mark Pilkington???

Or what about a Tornado F3 simulator from the same source?
Yep link is Ok but I should have said it was for a collection of RAF trophy/presentation silverware, more memorabilia than actual aircraft related.
Paul
How was it? I couldn’t make it due to work although I reckon my work should give me a paid day off anytime there is an airshow or display.
Paul
Well not exactly on ebay but someone may be interested in one of these, especially the RAF Tengar ones from the fifties, I wonder how many of these type items are held in storage somewhere.

I take it that it is not your hand holding the program!
Looks like a fair gathering of old timers so I hope it went well for them.

Hi Stormbird
I went on the Friday from about 10 am to 6 pm and thoroughly enjoyed myself especially seeing the B-1 as I am quite into jets at the moment. I think that Friday was the best for weather so was lucky to have chosen that day, I agree with Mark that the entry costs were high but luckily avoided these. Was disappointed in the lack of warbirds as I remember a few years ago when there were loads of them.
My big question for the day is this though. The Roulette(s?) only did a solo display, what happened to the rest of them? Is this budget cutting or some other reason,
Cheers Paul

Is there anything in her that you would find desirable/useful to keep your two going?
Just curious Paul

Try this link for a sat image of launcher 6A, the uncompleted launcher 6B is also visible (follow the zig zag trenches to the SE) as well as the preliminary earthworks for the underground launcher 6C.
In the book “Fire across the desert” mentioned above it states that apart from the massive financial burden of continuing with Blue Streak the project was doomed because of the liquid fuel propellant used, it was estimated that 5 to 6 minutes would be needed to fuel the rocket and stabilise its gyros yet only 4 minutes warning could be obtained of Russian missile launches leaving the British missile silos vulnerable to a first strike. This is why the US developed Minuteman which could be launched in under 60 seconds.

Even though this is an old thread I thought someone may be interested in these photos of the Blue Streak / ELDO launcher as it is now, in one of them I am standing inside the exhaust well for a size comparison.
