I once watched a documentary about how the Japanese bombed mainland USA by launching balloons with a bomb attached from Japan and letting them float all the way over the Pacific, accuracy was not very important obviously.

All of those people are extremely lucky, I imagine it would have been a very different ending if the sea state was as bad as that area is famous for.
Paul
Yes, the DC3 is sad especially as it was airworthy when delivered, it looks quite badly corroded in areas now. Still hats off to them as I can’t admit to having saving anything that large.

Hi
Mark Pilkington will be able to answer this better than anyone else but I believe the option of selling the Beaufighter was raised several years ago and met with a lot of opposition, possibly leading to a change in governing committees?
I do agree that some of the outdoor exhibits are in poor condition though, it is every museums dilemma -dispose of one thing to save another.

Thanks for the info, added the helmet to my long list of things I need to aquire.

After reading the posts above can I assume that a 1984 Jaguar pilot would be wearing a Mk 3B or 3C helmet with a P type oxygen mask?
Thanks Paul
More’s to the point, if they close the drome down and use the land for a new real estate development, what do you reckon a block of dirt that close to the CBD with a beautiful view of the city in ‘old money’ Essendon would be worth? $700,000? $800,000? Doesn’t exactly leave it open for the average punter, does it?
But Kevin Dudd (oops Rudd) just announced a federal package to make housing more affordable, so they should be dirt cheap!
Paul
JDK you’re right about using it or losing it, if you base it on my patronage it would be better closed. The airways museum has been on the ‘to do’ list for a while now, occasionally I call in for a look at the planes parked there and have been for a flight in the DC-3 but thats about it.
I just wonder if you keep moving things like airports further away how does that serve the general population who mass near the cities, if you have to drive 3 hours just to get to the airport would it be worth it.
Personally I see the councils and government rubbing their hands together thinking of all the new rate money they could be collecting!
There is a small airstrip located next to the Hume Hwy at Wallan but I see from my latest Melways that an urban developement is going to gobble that up too.

Here is a photo of a Blackburn Bluebird taken at Essendon in late 1936 or early 1937, as you can see there is not much residential development then!
What I don’t understand is where these people expect the aviation community to move to, Tullamarine won’t take them, Avalon is too far and Moorabbin will probably come under the same pressure now especially since that trainee pilot crashed a few weeks ago.

PS The aircraft in the background is Gypsy Moth VH-UIA owned by ANA in which my great Aunt gained her pilots licence.
so out of interest, How much does a jaguar cockpit go for and how easy is it to find the parts to complete it?
I have been finding it not too difficult to get parts as there seems to be a flood of surplus bits at the moment, that is one of the main reasons I bought one although some people are requesting exorbitant prices for otherwise useless articles.

Well David, it seems like no one can answer the question about the ‘S’ and ‘P’, I was expecting a few experts to jump in straight away. That 97 Squadron website is very good, a lot of detailed information there.
Cheers Paul
In the first image of Davids fathers logbook he flew in ED869 ‘S’ on the 17th and then ED869 ‘P’ for all the other flights. Was it common for an aircraft to have its squadron codes changed like that?
Thanks Paul
Jaguar XX977 update
Hello everyone, I thought I would post a few pics of how the Jaguar is going, I have managed to aquire a few bits such as a PSP and cushion, seat harness, standby compass, stick top, NAVWASS control and some extra instruments. The most exciting thing though is I pulled the moving map display out and found it was in perfect working order and even contained a film, I do not have power to the cockpit but by shining a torch through from the back I could get a decent image on it – the pic didn’t turn out so well though – the map is currently on Catania in Sicily.
All the best Paul
Isn’t there photos on here somewhere of some underground hangars in Albania (or somewhere in that area) with Migs in them.
Or you could try bunkerbernie – he knows the location of some in Oz apparently.
Cheers Paul
