I too have never heard of the RAF wanting the F-14 at any point. Your source?

F-14 would’ve been needed for the BVR Air superiority mission task. It’s what the RAF would’ve had for BVR threats.

F-18Growler, I know English isn’t your best language, but that sentence makes absolutely no sense…

She’s spendy. That is probably what stopped the English from buying her. (This link was sent to me by the friend)

F-14D had major maintainability improvements over the A, especially in the wiring. Early in the D’s career, when it still had a priority, mmh/fh were 16-17. But since it was known to be going out of service, fewer parts and trained personnel were being made available and this often resulted in repair and reuse of parts that previously would have been replaced. Towards the end with the phaseout looming that number rose to over 40.

I had always thought she was more a victim of politics than cost. DoD had married the frumpy Hornet instead of the beautiful lethal Cat, which made me wonder what they were thinking. They were bedfellows with Boeing which developed the present day forms of the Hornet. I do know that Cheney who helped kill the Tomcat program had ties with with Boeing.

I agree 100 percent. Computers do not possess the decision making skills that pilots have. Neither can a drone maneuver like an aircraft can in the hands of a skilled pilot. The piloted plane will gun down the drone every time. The stuntman and his metal steed will always have the edge.

Mangled English. Fans of the F-14 like to mangle their English when talking about the airplane. It is not proper to call a US Navy jet a ‘him’. To us old salts they are ladies. Veteran’s that worked on the airplane don’t do it and Navy aviation veterans in general are not guilty in this regard. Just the fans. I feel like decking them. Don’t insult the Lady. 😡

That was a good article. Thanks for sharing it. One of the complaints as the airframes got older was increased maintenance hours. Grumman was partly a victim of politics as well. The contract to make replacement aircraft was not renewed leaving the fleet with aging airframes.
One of the shortcomings of the F-14 and other Grumman aircraft was the constant leaking. It took a lot of attention to reduce this leakage.
I am retired Navy and I worked with her sister-the A-6 Intruder. I spent long hours wiping leakage from the hinder parts of that aircraft. I said many times that the Intruder needed a diaper up to her intakes.

This youtube shows the use of those CFT doors. You can see them pop open during high angles of attack. The maneuvering is also pretty impressive.

Much like with women, I prefer this angle of the PAK-FA the most:

LOL. She is an aesthetically pleasing aircraft. The wide spacing of the nacelles gives her a more curvy look than if they gave her a small tight booty like the Raptor.

Too bad YouTube took down the video of the Hornet doing freaky Flanker moves out in the desert.

It looks like they threw an F-4 Phantom and an F-16 in a blender and that is what they came out with.
