Excellent work there Tom, the printed parts look very good assembled, that wheel case is in superb condition as well, one of the hardest parts to find undamaged; I might look into having an intercooler case printed for mine, as they are hard to come by also.

My only concern would be what happens when human remains are discovered in something like the “fox hole” dug in Latvia, then I remembered it was television, and the “farmer” that directed them to the dig site probably knew more than was mentioned, and like most things (American Digger or whatever it was called) it’s all rehearsed.

“It must be hard work going through life stamping out spot fires regarding ones reputation”

Only since the advent of the internet I’ll wager.

Another “hot potato” to divide the forum; I’ll be watching it this evening, so will reserve comment until then, (although I will probably write a letter of complaint to my MP before posting here)

“Is this not the same as ‘Johnny Foreigner’ is massively corrupt and were not” !

Well I don’t see it that way; the term “johnny foreigner” could as easily apply to an American as an Egyptian, the Americans have had their civil war, and they quite like P40’s, it wont be smashed up with axes and swords on a youtube video just for the hell of it.

It may have been relatively safe in the desert, but that was then, this is now, and factions in that general area don’t have a whole lot of love for us westerners or symbols of our ” military/colonial past” obviously it would be better at the RAFM, but that isn’t to say that it wont be wrestled from the grasp of it’s current custodian some point in the future (if indeed it is actually stateside)

Bruce, presumably your statement needs to be filed under the heading “I know more than I can tell” because I certainly don’t know where it is!

Whilst in theory the Spitfire may have been “public property” (in a sense) in reality nothing we do as individuals (or even small groups) would have any effect on the RAFM, and so in all probability it would remain in store never to be seen.

If the arrangement had been a financial one where the RAFM paid Kennet for the recovery, and then allowed them to purchase said Spitfire at market value, I suspect the value of the recovery would somehow equal the value of the Spitfire; so what difference would that make? we would have an element of transparency, perhaps we could have argued that the Spitfire was under valued, or else the cost of recovery was too steep, but nothing would change in real terms, and Kennet surely cannot be held responsible for the transit of the container, or indeed the turmoil that enveloped the country.

As to where the P40 is now, I’m not sure anyone on this forum knows, but if it is in the USA then better there than Egypt.

Moggy I’ll not dispute the facts as you have set them out, as I don’t know any different; am I wrong in thinking that this aeroplane crashed near a gypsy encampment?
not that I’m suggesting their involvement, but as I understand it, the site could never be described as isolated, and what was found on the previous dig? we see all to often now that aircraft dug in the ’70’s (for example) that items not considered valuable are just thrown back in the hole, priorities (with regards to value) have change over the years, cockpit parts, engines, guns and yes personal effects were the “spoils of war”

Are you saying that the smattering of personal effects that you have listed above were deliberately removed from the decomposed remains of the crew? I for one cannot see why you would bother to do that for so little and then hide said remains (presumably back in the hole to be discovered on the next dig) and if you are suggesting that there was far more found (and not revealed) then why admit to finding anything?

As I didn’t see you last post whilst typing my reply either move this reply or delete it as you normally do. Edit – Might as well stay where it is

Well Avion I bow to your superior knowledge, if I am wrong on both counts then I’m happy to say so however I don’t think I’ll end up in a court of law for “believing” someone innocent until proven guilty ,and not on a forum such as this either.

Do we take it then that he was proscecuted by the French authorities then, or have you deliberately quoted me out of context?

As far as I’m aware Tony Graves isn’t a member of this forum, so if you are waiting by the computer you might need to send out for some pot noodle….. what ever the circumstances of the Lancaster dig that seemed to upset so many uninformed members of this forum, it has to be said that at a crash site that has been excavated previously, it must be almost impossible to say when and what exactly happened; we both know that the French authorities were contacted, and I don’t believe they found anything un toward, I believe Mr Graves is a resident in France, and as such would think the powers at be wouldn’t have too much trouble finding him, if there were a need.

You yourself must be aware that many on this forum are easily led, especially by prominent members/ moderators (delete where applicable) and I urge you and others to restrict yourselves to fact.

“The controversial incident in the past was the recovery / grave robbing (delete where you feel applicable”)

Moggy do you have any hard evidence to support the “grave robbing” accusation? if not I would suggest you “delete where applicable”, as you would have no hesitation in doing so on someone else’s behalf.

Is it only FL that they have made an all ticket event, or are all other air shows at DX going the same way?

I was there some ten years ago when the September air show was fog bound; they did exchange the ticket for the October do, but that was (and has been) a half assed affair with jets, helos and utterly butterly types, and not “like for like” at all; no refunds were given.

I can’t believe that an airshow of the stature of FL, that has been going for something like 20+ years is so unsure of it’s market that they need to sell advanced tickets; anyone here that has tried to get in or out of Duxford on the Legends Saturday & Sunday (during daylight hours) must have experienced a degree (!) of congestion, I would suggest that may have a bigger part to play.

One final thought. it can’t have escaped anyones attention that the events at Shoreham will have an impact on airshows from now on, may be this is part of the pre planning for emergency services.

Back in the days of the CB radio craze the govt said we couldn’t use the US band radios because they would interfere with military communication, it was then pointed out by some knowledgeable (or not) person that the frequency was last used by Lancaster bombers; that being 27.124 MHz AM.
