I see from the accident card that G-ACBH was equipped with a Gypsy III, it was my understanding it had a Cirrus engine, or was that when it was rebuilt?
Well now’s a good time to buy agricultural land with grain prices at a 10 year low, obviously it would be expensive but the IWM have been stiffed before; they once paid 29 million for a building they already had…..
“Channel 4 and / or the production company will almost certainly have made a financial contribution to the event in order to be able to film and broadcast it.
Given that it is rather unlikely that another competing TV station is going to be allowed similar access.
It is not that difficult to comprehend”
I wouldn’t disagree with that, my comments regarding the BBC(tv) were of a broader nature, and as such I still fail to see how they could not have put together a programme specifically (as opposed to a snippet of inclusion in a news programme) on the BoB.
The event at Goodwood was just one of many , but not a requirement for inclusion in making a retrospective (by it’s very nature) programme; they might have even sat down with all of their old film clips and removed all of the P40’s, Mustangs, Wildcats, four cannon Hurricanes, tropical filtered mkV spitfires etc. etc, that to me is far more annoying than spur of the moment mistakes made by young (ish) presenters.
For what it’s worth I also agree with your third and fourth paragraphs .
Perhaps I’m easily pleased John, whilst I really enjoyed Stephen Bungay’s contribution to “Spitfire Ace” (all those years ago) I don’t see him as an ad hoc presenter, but will be only to happy to see him on the TV more often; I’m with you all the way with regards Chris Evans…..
As to there being a whole 3 minutes coverage at 10 pm, I do now see the error of my post…… I watched the earlier coverage interrupted to go live to Brighton to see Ronnie Corbett ( he who hasn’t yet learned the words to the national anthem) and thought then “this is what I pay my licence fee for”
I remember probably for the 60th Sue Lawley (I think) did a report on the Battle every night for a week! how times have changed.
“What you believe doesn’t really matter when it comes to contracts does it?”
Please expand, all knowledgeable one….
Well I don’t listen to the radio, ( perhaps I should have made it clear that I was referring to BBCTV) so we’ll see about the others….
Has it occurred to those slagging the BBC that they were not invited to the party beyond basic reporting?
If I were Channel 4 and the production company, Arrow I believe, and had presumably bid to present the event would I be happy with the Beeb turning up and competing with me?
I don’t believe the BBC had to be invited to make a fitting tribute to those men women and machines that fought, and endured the Battle of Britain.
I thought Dermot O’Leary did a pretty good job, I absolutely hated the ex-lax factor and was slightly dreading his take on the BoB, however I was pleasantly surprised, he is after all presenter, and Stephen Bungay isn’t, so I don’t know why some would suggest him.
The programme was obviously made on the fly, and appeared unscripted (in the main) that takes a certain kind of a person to carry that off, and also appeared to have been made as cheaply as possible, that appears to be the way at the moment, and I guess we’ll have to get used to that; as for the BBC, pitiful.
Three spitfires, and the Blenheim over Castle Hedingham 1500 hrs
Maybe an inherent weakness from previous wheels-ups; I doubt the radiator would have pulled the wing off, there isn’t very much holding them in, in first place.
Spitfire the History, (Morgan and Shacklady), Schooldays to spitfire, (Gordon Mitchell) and Spitfire in detail ( Frantisek Koran, Vladimir Danda, Josef Martinek, Miroslav Khol) almost entirely photographs and very detailed ones at that.
“I’d also add LF363 to keefy’s list, that had an incident a few weeks back where it divested itself of most of its oil and the situation was brought swiftly under control and LF is back on duty again.”
I believe this was a fatigue crack in a constant speed oil pipe, which apparently grounded the Merlin engined fleet, until new pipes (together with the correct brackets, were fitted) unfortunate timing with the Lanc out, and also the Dak and the mk19 but that did leave them with one chipmunk, so not a complete disaster…..
You can see the logic, as that is relatively fragile area of the wing, but if you can’t walk on the wing how do you get to the fuel tank and the wing fairing screws on the STBD side?
That mk26B really does look a nice aeroplane, and begs the question what would be better,(as a display) one of those or a fibreglass replica, admittedly neither are completely right for a BoB event, but ones an aeroplane and one isn’t.
Got a picture!
Bit of a coincidence as I was just looking at one; 5″ long, 1 3/4″ dia with about 5/8″ neck.
