…and there is only one LA546.
Mark
Without wishing to open that particular can of worms, surely it is what it is, i.e the remains of the cockpit from LA546.
(I know, don’t call you surely!)
A very nice little site you have there, i look forward to seing more as you add to it. Is this all your own collection or is there a group of you?
“There’s only one Tony Dyer!”
Well I did consider the Nitro Cellulose varnish as rightly pointed out by Stuart, but alas in their vigourous testing Gibson failed to trial it against salt sea spray and it failed to adhere and was prone to blistering in the vicious sun on that part of the UK coast. I have had to use a “modern alternative” that will of course disappoint the purist, but to me it maintains its visual original 1965 finish, whilst like the new Navy Sea Fury paint scheme “being easier to clean” 😀
Yes quite right, I believe Fender were the market leaders there with their “surf” guitars like the Mustang and the Jaguar !
More interested to know if you matched the varnish chips off the guitar. Hate to think that you would get pulled up for finishing it in the wrong shade.:D
Gibson’s have always used a nitro cellulose finish, it being very durable, and even capable of withstanding high speed licks ,normally associated with the flying V, but with a founder with the name of Orville, what would you expect!
I was only quoting from the rc moss website .
Is the plural of Royce, Royses?
If ever there was an A/C that deserved to be under cover ,it would be the Hastings, to think that it flew into Newark; poor old thing.
Oh, if only some of you knew what was really in a shed not far from there. . .
Actually I’m in a shed not far from there, but theres only 2 merlins and 1/2 a spitfire in this one!
Correct, but the last one I got about 18 months ago, ish. Was complete with all pumps, carb, log cards and inhibited and that was £10,000, admittedly, it still wanted an overhaul, but there you go, and it hadn’t been used in a wind tunnell at Boscombe Down.
mick
I think an engine as you describe for £10k is a good deal, £17k is a bit steep, but gone are the days when you can pickup a serviceable merlin for under £5k, and as they continue to be worn out and in some cases destroyed, they are just going to get more expensive; there are more warbirds around now in private hands, and no one is making engines for them.
Still over priced, if you want to pay this sort of money, they’ll keep putting the price up.
I’ve been opperating Merlins for 2 decades and they were overpriced then and they’re overpriced now.mick
Perhaps they aren’t over priced at all, may be its just your perspective; after all ,you wouldn’t want to have to make one from scratch would you?
Well between you ,you are making a good job of it, and I look forward to the next installment; r.e the spitfire, maybe when I’ve made a bit more progress, I’ll post a pic.
Cees, that really looks good, have you made the rudder pedal adj mechanism?
To correct an earlier post (thanks Pete) that is not Paul Rogers, from the CFBG, I admit to being mislead by someone who should know better!
Any use to you Tony……..
.
“It could possibly be used to fly again” ; thats why it was removed in the first place because it is so good!
you going Stu?!:D
Oh yes….. and I’ll take my trailer.
