While it’s always a mistake to under-estimate the collective stupidity of the general public (especially the US public, one might say) the arguments against the “over-priced French airplane stealing US jobs” are simple enough for even the dimmest to understand.
The Airbus is about as ‘French’ as the KC-767 is Japanese or Italian. It’s going to be assembled by American workers in the USA.
The selection of the Airbus will result in the creation of MORE US JOBS than selecting KC-767. It will result in a new airplane plant for the US economy, that will help regenerate Alabama. Boeing has already said that its existing workforce will keep their jobs.
The up front sticker prices are similar, but the Airbus will cost less in the long run, over its life.
The USAF customer rated the Airbus as better than the Boeing in every single criteria that it evaluated.
Better for the US worker. Better for the US aerospace industry. Better for the US tax-payer. Better for the US Air Force.
Arguing for the 767 is downright unpatriotic!
You are right on every point except the us taxpayer, They simply will not see the logic in this argument. They will see it as non us vs us.
The way congress and the 2 democratic candidates are going to look at this is the air force going for a “french” plane when a perfectly suitible “american” plane is available. The vast majority of the taxpaying public will also see it thus. It may not be the correct view, but thats how it will appear. The airforce brass can argue and explain till doomesday, but, unfortunately, no one will be willing to listen. Boeing, I’m sure, will stir the pot with tales of layoffs, closing facilities, stock price plumetting, etc. Again, the A330 does perform better in most respects than the 767, but it will not matter in the slightest, public and govt will only see non-us aircraft being purchased at the expence of an acceptable us-made alternative, that has a cheaper up front price to boot! Let the fun begin!
What? Re-design the F-35 to remove the non-US parts? Scrap the M777, the Stryker, the C-27B purchase, the Seaspray radar buy, the Harrier, the T-45, the gun on the M1, etc? :diablo:
There’d be political fallout over here, you can be sure. I’m not sure that Boeing, Lockmart et al would be happy, since far more US-origin military equipment is bought by other countries than the USA buys foreign-origin kit. I’d expect them to discreetly lobby against it.
Dont forget the M240 machine gun…and the SAW……and the M9 pistol…..But the Stryker is nothing to be happy with….They could have kept that one.
Being a Scot, and the RAF getting the A330MRTT your question is irrelevant
???????
Completely disagree. This will be jumped on by the Dems as a Godsend! More ammunition to throw at Reps. As for having 3 airframe manufacs…..just dont buy it at all.
All in all….a good military decision……….possibly a veeeery BAD political one. The Dems are NOT going to like this……and will lose no time injecting this into the election.
You’d rather the USAF be equipped with a less capable tanker force?
It IS equiped with a less capable tanker force. Would you have France equiped with a less capable fighter force?
I could see the AF give the contract to Eads/NG………it would be a pretty typical AF decision, totaly keeping in line with their other recent mistak…I mean…decisions….the CSAR contract springs to mind here. And why not go with the 330? What with the Boeing production line being located in a HEAVILY Democratic district……and the next President being a Democrat.(from Chicago no less!) Why not *iss off the people who will have TWO branches of govt next year?!
With constant negotiations then re-negotiations and delays and underfunding etc. etc. etc. In all honesty stories like the Kitty Hawk are likely to be around for sometime! Really, very much like a South American Soap Opera. Except without all of the action!:diablo:
And that hot girl Maria!
Now it FRIDAY?! Oooooooo!!!! EADS/NoGrum MUST have won!!!!! http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/aerospace/archives/132870.asp?source=mypi
I could see the 1st hull being launched in…saaay….30 years.
I would hate to see the IN scrap the MIG-29K deal, it seems to be doing well. Would be neat to see MIGs operating off the KH.
AAARRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!! The suspence!!!! http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSN2526948920080225
