Is that the attack the Argies claimed to have hit Invincible?
You’d be correct on all counts.
A total of 5,057 were produced by McDonnell Douglas which close its F-4 production line in 1979, while Mitsubishi in Japan produced another 138 for a total of 5,195 (though I have seen a number of 5,201 a few times….).
This means that the F-4 is the most produced Western supersonic jet, and the second most produced Western jet period with the F-86 being number 1 in that regard.
A total of 10 nations aside from the United States operated the F-4, while Australia also took F-4E’s on lease for a few years until their F-111’s arrived.
Of the 12 nations total, there are 7 that still operate the F-4 in combat roles, and the United States also operates the F-4 as a drone and test aircraft.
You know, after reading that MiG-29 profile in the January issue of AFM I was kinda thinking I’d like to see a nice insert like that about the Phantom.
In fact, I was also wondering…..if the MiG-29 profile was number 2 then what was number 1?
How many F-16s have been produced so far?
Tomcats shot down to A6Ms…..”The Final Countdown”!!!!!!!!
Didnt the French have the same idea when they axed the 2-seat Raf on the CdG?
Seem the argument is geting back to the old “smaller carrier is better thn bigger carrier argument”. In the real world, this has been settled time and again in favor of the big carrier……. doubt things have changed now. Its been on since the 1920s and small carrier has lost every time. But regardles of size of CVF……..I ust dont think the Brits (unfortunatly) have the stones to operatea viable air group off these ships…….if they even get them (What a TEMPTING cost cutting target they make to the boys in treasury!)
USN CVs are operating less a/c (four VFA down from 2 VF, 2 VFA, 1 VA) more due to financial reasons than anything else. The retirement of the S-2 without a replacement will also reduce overall airwing numbers. Its kinda sad to see how far naval aviation has slid….all Honet airwings………what a travesty.
IDEALY…….what I would LOVE to see is, the carrier embarking 3 12 plane sqdns, plus 849 Hawkeyes and 5-6 Merlins…..of course it would be CTOL! This would mean at least FOUR FAA JSF sqdnsand the purchase of E-2s. This would give 46 a/c embarked. VERY doable on a 62000 ton platform. Even CdG could do that……
These are the Brits we’re talking about…….MASTERS of stuffing tiny airgroups on large displacements!!!! Looks like there will only be two FAA squadrons…each with 8 a/c……..any embarked RAF sqds will probably be only 8 a/c per also……..so…….if FOUR squadrons of JSFs are embarked (not likely!) thats just 32.And thats forone carrier. Doesnt lok like they would be able to operate the second as an attack carrier at the same time, even in an emergency. How many sqds in Joint Farce Harrier now? They arent likely to increase it.
If NG plans on having the planes built in France, then, unfortunatly, they dont have a chance.
yes.
So how big will the Brit airgroup be? 16 JSFs + 3 AEW helos and 4 Merlins? Prtty small for 62000 tons. Or will hey deploy RAF a/c also? So maybe 24 or 32 in a “surge”. Still pretty small for such a large platorm.
Unfortunatly…as long as there is war, there will be “blue on blue”.
Looks like USAirways has dropped its bid for Delta.
It has a slightly better antiship capability than the A-4…….other than the upgraded A-4s that is.
SuE really NOT the best ACM machine……..pretty much a mudmover. She has the 2 guns, and I suppose you could hang a couple “Magics” on her, be she is really not a fighter v fighter crate.
