I guess its good the never got an “Essex”, or tried to buy “Victorious”……..
To be fair, I quite like the Clemenceau design, a lot of punch for a little ship and I think it is a shame a new owner couldn’t be found for Clemenceau herself. Back in the eighties I remember predicting that she and her sister ship woud end up with Brazil and Argentina, and if the Argentine economy had been in better shape this may well have happened. A lot of flat tops have had their careers cut short when they still had a lot of useful life left to them, and in this respect Clemenceau joins a long and distinguished list.
It would have been interesting to have seen what the British reaction would have been had Argentina made a serious offer for Clemenceau.
Might I sugest they name it “Jefferson Davis”?
Heard a rumor that ol Chavez is egging Argentina on to have another go at the Falklands………anyone hear anything about this?
Why would they act any differently. After all its US who seems to go around threatening everyone.
Not sure what country the US has threatened lately…..and , of course, I ran has never threatened to wipe any country off the map…….
[optimism] I think the Isrealis and Iranians will kiss and make up. I think they will discover that they have a lot more in common then differences.
After that, Kim Jong il will take a suicide pill. And the DPRK and ROK sign a unification pack, the North Korean children grow fat and lazy like their American counter part.
And finally, some of the people on this message board will finally find a girlfriend and not spend their entire life here. [/optimism]
What is this….”girlfriend” thing?
How bout a Falklands war movie from the Argies point of view? Say about 3rd fighter attack squadron of their navy…………../
The problem is so many names and so few ships……….Don’t feel to bad? Think what the poor Royal Navy has to live with!:( 🙁 🙁
What part of Michigan are you from?
They might be getting another “Prince of Wales”………..sad.
I’m about a mile from the main runway of NAS Oceana in VA Beach. My Grandfather was a sailor on the New Mexico…….
I’m the product of a southern gal and a yankee fighter pilot……my mom was a secretary at Moody AFB when she met my dad. He was off in Vietnam flying F-100s when I was born. His side comes from Michigan and her side landed in Savannah GA from Ireland, so I have relatives that served on both sides during the war of northern agression (lol). part of my problem with politicians stems from the fact that they really, when you boil it down, have no real effect on peoples lives. So they must make……….”bussy work”……make themselves seem important without really accomplishing a thing. When I was a kid, it was illeagal to kill someone, you couldnt speed, and you had to pay taxes. And yet……crime still exists……and laws and paperwork still gets made……..a tremendous WASTE.
As a youngman my Library would easily rival yours and very similar at that. I especially like Commander Evans guts off Samar attacking a much superior Japanese Fleet of Battleships and Cruisers with his little Destroyer. (i.e. Fletcher Class) Clearly, a great man……….Yet, great men are not always Destroyer Captains going in harms way! That was my point and still is…………….the world is a big place and WWII is only a very small slice of it! Let’s not forget all of our hero’s over time. Both Military and Civilian………….which President Ford was both!
The ONLY politician I sort of respect is Mr Reagan…all other are nothing to me. I’m pretty well read on the Revolutionary war…XYZ affair,….war of 1812….Civil War…etc……right now I’m boneing up on The Falklands War. Trying to figure out if the Argies really couldnt get enough wind over 25 de Mayo’s deck to launch against the RN task force or not. But back to politicians, Sorry….I just cant put the leaches up on a pedestal and bask in the warmth and awe that they seem to thrive on. Our political system is so screwed up from what the Founding Fathers envisioned, that I honestly think it cannot be saved. And the naming of the lead ship of the most powerful capital ship on Earth after a politician is, to me, a typical self serving move by a bunch of leaches to justify their lofty position in the swamp that is DC.
I liked “Enemy at the Gates”. I think the company I work for gets their employee relations handbook from the Soviet Army of WW2.
Also….just finished “Sea Of Thunder” details Halsey, Kurita, Ugaki, and Evans in the second world war. VERY good read. Have also read “Carrier Strike”, War in the Pacific”, The Fast Carriers”, Incredible Victory”, The Little Giants”, Combined Fleet Decoded”, “Midway The Battle that Doomed Japan”…..the list is almost endless………Gee….you can tell much from just ONE post…….AND I’m very much a student of the “Monty Python” brand of sarcastic comedy….in other words…I’m a total geek.
The “Travesty” is for you to talk about President Ford with such disrespect! Especially, for a great man you obviously know nothing about more than a couple quick headlines! Also, do you want to name a Aircraft Carrier Lexington because it sounds cool or do you really know of the Battle and of the people lost? Do you know what war it was even in? Instead of using google why don’t you go read a good book………….you may learn something!
There have been 2 aircraft carriers named Lexington in the US Navy. The 1st was a converted battlecruiser and was lost at Coral Sea. The 2nd saw much service in the second world war and was the longest serving “Essex” class carrier in the navy. She ended her active days as the US Navy’s training carrier. What makes Ford a “great” man escapes me. I can see that when you cannot put forth any sort of civil argument you stoop to the lowest common denominator of personal insults. Now….if Mr Ford is “great” cause he served in a war,….well…so did I……Do I get a CV named after me? No. And befor you start making accusations about being in a rear area……I was a tank driver in GW1…….2nd AD……my tank was hit, but fortunatly for me an my buddies the round didnt penetrate…….I do not expect any warship to be named after me. If you think Mr Ford is “great” cause he was a politician, then You and I will have to simply disagree, because I DO NOT hold mere politicians in ANY esteem. They are the worst form of leach IMO. If you would care to be a bit more civil in future, I may be willing to have more discussions with you, as military history is something of a hobby of mine, and you seem to have similar interests.
Sorry….but its a TRAVESTY to name this ship after an unelected 2 year president. The US Navy needs to get away from naming its capital ships after politicians (the lowest form of life in the universe). I would much rather see her named “Lexington”. We havent had one of those in a while.
