I still think those Sukhois could be quite useful in a limited conflict. For example: Chavez buys North Korean long range range missiles which could reach the USA, they send over a carrier and some F-18s to destroy them. In such a scenario anti-ship missile equipped Su-30s could pose a real threat.
I dont think Mr Chavez would be stupid enough to give the US the excuse buy aquiring ballistic missiles, but if he did, rest assured 30 Flankers would not protect them or even threaten the attacking forces. It wouldnt be just one carrier. It would probably be at least 3. And B-2s and a load of cruise missiles. And AWWACS, and jammers, and…….well…….we all know how the US would handle a campaign like that. Dont mean to be insulting or disparage the Venezuelan armed forces, but its just the way it is.
Any chance of follow up orders? Or will it just be the 30?
Another question……..How will Airbus pay for the development of the aircraft?
BTW the airport here has the WORST layout in Christendom. A new arrival wing was added about 4 years ago, so now you get to walk about 10miles to get ur bags. Not sure how customs would be handled. Still…..it will be nice to have a widebody service here. Not too sure on the population, but there are several cities in Hampton Roads…….besides Norfolk theres Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeak, Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport News. NN has its own airport, the big carrier there is Valuejet.
The story was in the Virginian-Pilot today. http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=107883&ran=121152
dont forget to modernize AEW Gannets with a Searchwater radar…….
Havent heard a thing in local media. Big rumor here is that MAYBE Jetblue will start service here soon. Biggest thig currently out of ORF is a Delta 757 once a day. UPS also flies 757s out of here. Fedex flies 727s. Otherwise its all 737s, MD-80s/DC-9s, CRJs, E-170s, and Q400s. Its MUCH more interesting a couple miles away at NAS Norfolk. 747s, DC-10s, C-17s, C-5s, C-43s, C-9s, a DHL DC-8 once a week and even AN-124 once (that I’v seen) all military charters.
Well…..I guess if there is a flight between UK and Norfolk then ORF can FINALY be considered an international airport. But, really, unless your military, theres not much here in Hampton Roads to merit a direct flight from England. We do have the 400th aniversary of Jamestown coming up…….and I guess theres the beach……and Busch Gardens an Williamsburg…….I imagine the Brits wouldn’t be too keen on Yorktown……Fort Monroe has an interesting museum……the Hampton air and space center is pretty nice….the Apollo XII capsule is on display there along with the Mercury capsule that sank after Grissoms flight……oh! Theres a really nice F-4E with “Mig Kill” stars on it there. Theres allways a carrier or three docked at NOB….can be seen from I64 bridge tunnel……..and tons and tons of F-18s and F-15s and F-22s.
Prob would have been cheaper to build a whole new ship………nice tho.
Would Syria be STUPID enough to actualy fire ballistic missiles at Israel?
Would Syria be STUPID enough to actualy fire ballistic missiles at Israel?
LORD I wish the RN would have leased some AV-8B plus’s from the USMC!
OMG a pig just flew by my window!!!!!
Heard they got her under her own power again………damage may not be that bad. Is the missile more akin to the exocet? The CIWS (Phalanx) might have hit it short of the ship, but debris continued inbound and hit?
If it was a missile, maybe it was destroyed just short of the gunboat?
