Should someone else have a similar problem, I’d like to inform that James and I are working in the background. Firefox has crashed after the “reset” and the last time I noticed that the icon was spinning and the information bar at the bottom read “retrieving data from Key Publishing” or words to that meaning. (My computer speaks Swedish.) I hit the back-button while it was retrieving data as opposed to waiting until it finished. I never wait but next time I will to find out if it ever finishes retrieving data.

    Hi James,

Well, I did follow the instructions and it really made a mess of my installation of Firefox. I had my profile on a drive other than the default system drive but now everything is “default”. Luckily, I have a backup image of the system and can restore it quite easily.

The installation of version 50.1.0 was fresh and no add-ons other than FlashPlayer so I doubt that the “reset” has “repaired” anything. I will run it like this for a week or so but since it happens at random, not every day, not even every week but today it occurred twice … … it is difficult to isolate the culprit. The first time today was while browsing the historic forum. The second time was while composing my response to the other thread with the “log in” problem. I do however believe that it has something to do with “getting data” in the background for the ads or whatever needs the data. I know that I don’t need it … … !

I had the same problem when logging in the first time after the recent forum maintenance. After having successfully logged in, I saved a new link to the forum. Using that link cured my problem.

Every now and then, Firefox (currently 50.0.2) locks up and does not respond. It actually locks up the system (Windows 7 SP1 Professional) and I have to “push the button” to restart. The Key Aviation Forum is loading a lot of “crap” in the background. This time it happened while getting data from “stat.comoona.com” or “stat.komoona.com” (spelling). Does Key och we really need all that “crap”, presumably related to advertising? It has come to the point where I don’t visit the forum while working with other programs.

I’m on google chrome ,sounds like it’s occurring on most systems.

That makes the forum software the prime suspect!

I know the page dropping down each time you look at something is really annoying now.

I’m running Firefox and this behaviour is “new” but I can’t tell if it is due to the forum software being updated or Firefox being updated. A lot of “crap” is loading (can be seen at the bottom of the browser window) with certain pages – maybe it is an incompatibility between the browser and how the forum loads the ads? No matter what the cause may be, it is annoying to click “historic aviation” … :stupid: … ending up in “photographic”.

Hello nennrita, well, the thread starter is still around and waiting for further insights … :eagerness: … but fifteen years is a long time. It’s amazing that you found the thread!

That watch on his wrist looks like a Breitling to me. A commercial picture from the era of the Breitling Fighters?

There was “amateur footage” on the New Zealand TV news of the accident, I remember being in tears watching it as he was an idol for me growing up. Just recently I watched a video on YouTube – narrated by Bernard Chabbert – featuring interviews with him and Ray about MH434 and flying in general, as well as one of him taking Sarah for a spin in their Phantom.

I never got to meet him or see him fly in person, but he is very much missed. Thanks for posting, Anna.

I found this photo a few weeks ago online, I hope someone knows who took the photo so credit can be given.

    Appears to have ground looped

    the one that killed

As far as I know, aircraft do nothing until people get into them. It happens that people do things to aircraft that may get them killed but not the other way around … … right?

Can someone please share how to open attachments on here?
I click on the attached images and the paperclip and nothing happens!

Go to Forum Actions > General Settings > scroll down to Thread Display Options and verify that “Show Images” is checked.

There doesn’t appear to be any valve overlap in the DB601, but the DB605 cam lobe shape would suggest there is. Unfortunately, I do not have a DB605 manual – any donations would be gratefully accepted! πŸ˜€

I interpreted “Schwinghebel” as a single unit, the exhaust valve had to close before the inlet valve could open. OldSpitty posted a link and watching the videoclip, I see that it is a two piece “Schwighebel” and valve overlap is possible. As I remember it, the Merlin and Griffon have four camlobes for each cylinder, one camlobe for each valve.

There are two cam lobes per cylinder, each lobe actuates an inlet valve (einlassventil) and an exhaust valve (auslassventil), therefore four valves per cylinder. I have attached a scan from my DB601 manual which should provide a clearer view of the mechanism. Please note the cam profile on the DB601 is not as ‘square’ as the DB605 – the DB605 has quite an abrupt opening and closing action, with a longer duration open than the DB601 and consequently, I believe, makes the DB605 sound like a race engine, especially at idle. πŸ™‚

That arrangement means that there’s no valve overlap, right?

Warbirds Worldwide was in my opinion the best. I really wish someone would start that 1 up again.

So do I. I have every issue and had renewed my subscription one week prior to it going “bust”. They owe me … … !

So do many other magazines. It is probably because in the past, before airmail became common, it look weeks for a magazine to reach the outer reaches of the empire.

Yes, I remember now that the first issue of FlyPast that I bought, the “Airshow Special 86”, was delivered by horse and carriage … :eagerness: … but that was to Sweden, outside the empire. The monthly issues were on the shelves a few weeks before the “month on the label” but never two months before. It has been stretched and I donΒ΄t think it has anything to do with “slow horses”.

One of the root causes was a magazine circulation war.

That is a more likely cause, I think and difficult to “reset” the loop.
