RE: Sabena : end of days

LAST EDITED ON 04-10-01 AT 06:30 PM (GMT)[p]City Bird – another Belgian airline – is already banckrupt. Though they asked for banckrupty protection in the beginning of the week, the judge announced it would be impossible to survive. CityBird said it would have had enough money … at least to survive tomorrow.

Sabena is still waiting to see what the judge is going to say. Our gov. will hold any Swissair plane on the ground. That’s why all SAir flights to Brussel have been cancelled.

The flight Brussels-Boston does not have a bright future … too expensive, no profits at all. This will probably be the first flight to be stopped, together with the flights to Tokyo and DC.

    Wrong again!

Indeed Europe is too small for all those airlines. One has to stop business, in this case the SAir Group.

KabirT, you said the problems of SAir have their origin in Sabena. Ofcourse I don’t agree (not only because of my ‘roots’). SAir knew Sabena was not making profit at that time. Sabena still is an old fashion airline, still focussed on collonial routes in Africa. Profit was not necessairy, because the company was owned by the state. So far I have to agree with you. Swissair wanted to change the whole airline, first of all by buying new A-330/340’s and A-319/320/321 to replace the older fleet of 747-300’s and the 727-200’s. That’s the reason for the new crisis, not because of bad sabena managment. Don’t tell me I’m wrong, there are a lot of analysts who’ve been investigating the case here.

There are two reasons why Swissair bought Sabena stocks.
    – to become a bigger airline
    – to have a major position in the international airports, especially at Brussels int. but also in Heathrow.

Swissair does not have money to take off anymore, at least Sabena is still able to help itself, even without support of SAir.

Who’s responsable? First of all the ones who invested in the whole new fleet. But second of all the Banks UBS and CS, they are the ones who are really controlling SAir. Corti is just a puppet.

    Own fault

LAST EDITED ON 02-10-01 AT 08:25 PM (GMT)[p]My opinion

If Swissair is going into banckrupty, that’s because of their own managment mistakes, not because of their shares in Sabena. The future for sabena looks better than for Swissair. But we learned one thing : never trust a swiss again 🙂

It’s obvious that Swissair (with support of the Swiss government) does not care about legal actions, they are a bunch of selfish assholes! Instead of first warning their belgian colleagues about the new plan (Crossair integration), our prime minister and the minister for public enterprises had to hear it from the 6 o’clock news. This is rude, SR desirves to be punished. The lawsuit against SR, started by our own gov back in july, will continue. In fact, they will ask the total amount of money Sabena needs, not only for the € 125 million both parties agreed in, but for the total 250 B€!!

The Swiss Banks (USB/CS) who just bought 70 % of Crossair shares will offer more money so that the Swissair fleet could be integrated into crossair easily. Than, there’s no problem anymore for Swissair, they’ll go into banckrupty, and sabena will go with them. Only Sabena will still be a flying company, not just on paper.

I just heard an interview on the news with Rik Daems, minister of public enterprises. He was asked “do you think this action is smart of SAir?” “This is not a smart action, it’s actually very simple, it’s incorrect, illegal.”

This will probably be the first and last adventure of a Swiss company investing into EU-enterprises. Switzerland is better in banking, corrupting etc. It’s obvious SR failed in all of its actions. I hope they all burn in hell! If only the two planes crashed into the WTC’s, hit the Sr headquarters 🙂

That’s why Switzerland will never become a member of the EU, not because of their moral – neutral principles, but because they (not the people but the banks who controll Switzerland) are a bunch of asocial capitalists, who don’t care about the loss of thousands of jobs, not even in their own country. I was even suprised to see that the union trades are so calm, probably because they are also controlled by the same banks.

RE: Sabena : end of days

Sabena had to take over all flights to and from Zurich. Now that’s partnership.

The Swiss government is giving money to help Swissair for fuel and stuff. Our gov would like to help Sabena in the same way, but since Belgium is a member of the EU, everything first has to go through the European parlement. By that time, Sabena will already be a chapter in our history schoolbooks.

    RE: New update

Sabena will only focus on continental routes in the future, comet. Sabena already stopped flying to DC and Japan, for good, because those routes are never fully booked, and they are losing millions of dollars with hose long hauls.

RE: Sabena : end of days

    Update, Monday 1st october

Swissair has asked the Swiss government for banckrupty protection. This means SR is not able to pay the € 250 million for Sabena this month. Without this money, Sabena will not survive the end of next month.

Corti (president SR group) said that his first concers are to save Swissair, not Sabena. 2/3 of the Swissair fleet will be integrated in Crossair, the only devision of SR which still makes profit. I still wait to see the reaction of the Belgian government, if they are going to sue Sr again, it might be possible that we will never see the money.

    New update

Last update : sunday morning 8:14 am

Sabena pilots are still on strike. Sabena leased four airliners with cabine and cockpit crew to make sure that some flights will not be cancelled. Yesterday at least 1/3 and probably 1/2 of all flights were cancelled, and even more retarded.
On the other hand, the pilots are getting more support from the cabine-crew, since we all know that the famous “Business-plan” is there to safe Swissair, not Sabena.
I don’t know how much longer Sabena can hold this strike on, it costs them € 10,7 million for each day. If this goes on, sabena will be the first airlinecompany that goes banckrupt since the WTC-disaster. Analysts say that this could be before the end of next week.

So why the hell you say that Zurich is the city you live in! Correct your profile, and sabena is not yet saved, i repeat again! It’s just a temporary solution, it’s a Phyrrus-victory …

Thanks harry. You’ve also shown the airporthall with the futuristic airconditioning (thanks to the specific ceiling the fresh air can reach every point of the hall). Nice documentary.

Hahaha saved, that’s just a fairy-tail they tell to the public. OK, sabena is not yet in banckrupty, but they are in such big problems, nor the belgain government is allowed to, nor swissair wants to pay the amount of money necessairy to save the company.
But what if belgium had go on with this law-suit : two options
    – Belgium would win : The connections – not only with swissair – but with whole Switzerland would get worse. Belgium – as the ‘president’ of the EU – can not afford to make such diplomatic faults again (like with Italy, Austria, US etc). The EU would like to see Switserland joining its organisations, for the money ofcourse.
    – Belgium would lose : Swissair would not invest anymore in Sabena and Sabena would have to fire all of its employees. The BeGov. would have to pay even more to give all this people a new job, social security etc.

You see, both SR and BeGov. did not have good options. Maybe this agreement is the best political-economical solution, but I doubt that the people who work for Sabena will feel much safer now. It’s like a time-bomb which could explode every minut.

I see you’re also a Swissie. Dream on, jumboflyboy; sr is not out of problems yet. SR knew that sabena was in trouble long before they bought that 49 % of shares and an option to get more (till 85 %). It’s a normal thing they invest again in their own company. If it wasn’t for the political reasons, they would have lost the lawsuit anyway.

RE: at least Ryanair are cheap idiots.

They only promote their one way tickets, Sabena does not sell one way tickets unless flying in business class. So it will never be the same : or they are comparing the full packet with just a one way ticket or they compare business with economy class. The prices are the ones that I also found in the newspaper so there must be something wrong about them, otherwise the judge wouldn’t force them to change their advertisments.

Ryanair can be usefull when you want to fly to Ibiza for example, a couple of days partying, get drunk and than fly back. But when you want to get in time, if you have a company to run, people will always rely on the classic airlinecompanies. I just can’t believe they can make the prices so low. You need the money to let the plane take of, you need to pay for a license to fly from that airport (not expensive in Charleroi, about 200 € or even less as the government is paying the most.

But thanks anyway Bhoy, but there’s always a tricky part, there’s something smelly about it which we’ll find out later. I already heard they earn lots of money because their proces of cancellation is not working properly (not by accident but with intensions to do so), so people don’t want to go through the whole proces, they just leave it like this!

RE: Ryanair still are a bunch of idiots.

Indeed Dan, you’re right, that’s what I mean. But it is illegal here to compare both with false arguments. And you say people are clever enough: the majority of the people don’t know anything about civil aviation at all. If Ryanair says they use the newest airframes, most of the people will think “Ohh, Sabena still uses old and dangerous airplanes”. That’s how people think, you can not deny this! At least this is what the judge will say.

Comparing both is like comparing a Honda Civic – quality for the money you pay – with the newest Mercedes S-540! This is just B–S–.

But even than, they are not just comparing both, they are humiliating Sabena. I read in the Newspaper today that the chairman of Ryanair says that Sabena does not have any sence of humor. Maybe they are a bit sensitive because of the trouble from the last months, but they can miss such idiotic things like hell.
