I don’t know if there’s a better system. Look at what happened in the Netherlands after Pim Fortuyn. Many people voted on a “small” party, a party which entered elections for the first time. The LPF showed such parties can not govern. Fact is: most people vote with their heart rather than their mind. Hence many will vote EXTREME left or right instead of CENTRE left/right.

Why do Brits still think they are the only ones who are being patriotic? It’s not Britain vs the rest of Europe. Britain is but one state in the EU. We Belgians are also proud of our country, we don’t want to give up everything as well.

Well I agree with you Dave. The EU Parliament should not interfere into domestic issues. However, currently, the EU is not a legal “body” yet. In fact, all the so called ‘European’ laws went through the British Parliament as well, as with every other national parliament. The constitution will change this, and give the EU Parliament autonomous power, which I think will be a lot better because now EU is not being governed by the EU Parliament or the Commission but a council of ministers, ie Blair, Chirac, Schroder and some others …
It’s not like the UK is forced to stay in the EU. If the house of commons decides tomorrow it wants to leave the EU there’s nothing we can do about it. However, nothing can prevent, in that case, the EU from protecting its own economy against the British. A possible trade union could solve that problem, like the EU has with Norway and Switzerland for example.
I do believe the constution will make things a bit more clear. In fact, some power (dealing with agriculture and fishery) will go BACK to the national states again. I like to see the EU dealing mainly with foreign affairs, defence and economic policies. It would be unwise though to try to change the whole British legal system. The UK should be able to keep it’s common law system. In fact, the EU has adopted common law as well in it’s institutions. It’s not like the EU is mainly focused on the Continental – French legal instutions.
However, I don’t understand why you British think the EU is ruled by the French. There are still 23 other members. You British have a lot more to say than us Belgians for example.

We know you couldn’t give a damn. That’s part of the problem. You have this insane belief that Britain owes you the lifestyle you aspire to. It doesn’t. The fact that you wasted your University education on a subject you lost interest in is no-one’s fault but your own. Maybe the career fairy will leave all you desire under your pillow one cold and frosty morning. If not, you’ll just have to do the best you can like the rest of us.

Gee, man, I’m in my 3rd year now in University, knowing I will have some problems finding a job for which I’m suited (historian). It’s quite possible I don’t find my dream job the first years. Therefor, I’m combining my university courses (history) with a basic teachers education. At least I’ll be able to teach children instead of sitting in my couch blaming immigrants why I’m not the next chief commissioner of the EU.
I hope I don’t end as a frustrated “Belgian Beer Specialist” instead of a historian . I have no problems with people living from social welfare because they can’t get a job, I do hate (and I really use the word hate) people who live from social benefits and are still not satisfied.
Comet, did you know if it wasn’t for people as Amnesty International, people who, unlike yourself, are not as selfish and greedy, you wouldn’t even get social benefits.  You’d probably fill your days begging for money or as a prostitute infected with all kinds of diseases. Luckily throughout history there have been other people who didn’t think like you, making this all possible for you. 😡
I’m really sickened by your last post.

Gee  Comet, if I didn’t knew you were a 31-year old woman I’d think you were Grumpy Old man. How come you are so negative, so xenophobic? I’m not into dreadlocks and stuff as well, but I have the experience of having an asylum seaker from Russia in my own house for already 5 years who’s working daily, paying taxes to make Belgium a nice place to live. Though he doesn’t like Belgium fries nor beer, he’s more of a Belgian than you’ll ever be … with all your sloeber-posters and tricolors.
Again, Duxfordhawk, don’t let yourself feel bad about this. I’m sure you will be very happy with Lena, don’t care about the few negative remarks, there are always people who are never happy or just don’t understand what love is about. Most of these people ought to get a boy/girlfriend instead of whining all the times and make others feel guilty about the fact they can’t find job. These people try to bring all what they don’t like about themselves (including their failures) into what they see as an immigrant. In fact, most of the racists in Belgium are people who are living from social welfare. Funny, ain’t it? Rich *******s tend to vote liberal parties, but frustrated unemployed are always voting Vlaams Blok.

Perhaps it takes a few days for Comet to reply. She might be enjoying being a foreigner herself in Belgium 🙂
Yeah she’s Belgian allright   She can be proud of the fact she would vote like 1 million other Belgians who think eating fries and drinking beer means being “Belgian”.
DFH, don’t worry. I hope can you can find hapiness with Lena. For each xenophobic nut in the world there are at least 3 open minded people!! Arthur, do you know the song “Bange Blanke Man” by Willem Vermandere? It’s really great. People who are anti-immigration are most of the times frustrated because they are not qualified to find a job of their own, and hence blame the pita-selling Moroccan in the street who IS paying taxes.

OK, this thread is slowly becoming another US vs the rest of the world thread. I’m not responsible though I started the thread. I just don’t want any PMs about this, OK?

Another al-Qaida hotbed. They wouldn’t have been arrested if they’d done nothing to arouse suspicion.
OOOh sorry. Forgot that too. You aren’t allowed to go anymore in Pakistan as well? Gee, are we still alowed to go to Iran? My sister in law is partly Iranian, she has family living there. Are we suspects now?
Doing something suspicious? It’s like arresting somebody because he’s looking to long at my car. he might steal it. 😡 😡 😡
